Sam Houston’s Steele Secures Southland Men’s Golfer of the Month
FRISCO, Texas – Sam Houston State sophomore Noah Steele is the Southland Conference Golfer of the Month for October, the league announced Wednesday. Southland Golfers of the Month are presented by UniversalCoin.com. Southland monthly award winners are nominated and voted upon by each school’s sports information director. Voting for one’s own athlete is not permitted. To earn honorable mention, a student-athlete must appear on 25 percent of ballots. Steele set a 54-hole, Bearkat record, firing a 17-under, 199, while finishing fourth and besting eight top-100 golfers at the Warrior Princeville Makai Invitational in Hawaii on Tuesday. He led Sam Houston to a team 54-hole record while earning sixth, ahead of three-top 50 programs, including Ole Miss, Colorado and Georgia Southern. Honorable Mention: Blake Elliot, McNeese; Lewis George, Central Arkansas. The Bearkats concluded their fall season and will tee off the spring slate Feb. 16-18, 2018, at the All-American Intercollegiate in Humble, Texas. This is the second-straight month a Sam Houston golfer has taken the league’s monthly award after teammate William Holcomb earned the honor for September. Steele ended the month of October with a stroke average of 70.55 in nine rounds, carding a low round of 64. The Kingston, Ontario, Canada, native finished in the top-25 in each of his three October events, including taking 14th at the Southern Dunes Invitational and 22nd at the Bayou City Collegiate Classic.
