first_imgArgentinian coach Diego Maradona recently visited the 97 400-seater Soccer City stadium, which will host the opening and closing 2010 Fifa World Cup matches. (Image: Nicky Rehbock)Argentinian national coach Diego Maradona sent a powerful message to the global football community during a recent visit to South Africa: “This will be a great World Cup, with no doubts of security.”It came as a welcome remark in the aftermath of the fatal attack on Togo’s football squad in Angola on 8 January, which cast widespread uncertainty over the safety of the June-July tournament. The Togolese team was in Angola to participate in the African Nations Cup, a 2010 Fifa World Cup forerunner, but they withdrew shortly after the incident.“They can say what they want but we know we are coming to play the World Cup in a safe country,” Maradona said during an inspection tour of the Argentinian base camp in Pretoria.“I have seen that with my own eyes. Anything can happen in the world, but I have spent a week in South Africa and everything is very good and the people very friendly.”The star also visited schools in Soweto, South Africa’s largest township, in the south of Johannesburg, and other 2010 venues during his week-long trip.“I will tell my players that they only have to think of playing football when they come here and worry about nothing else – this is the impression that I will take back to my country.”On 21 January Maradona visited the almost-complete Soccer City stadium in Johannesburg, which will host the opening and closing World Cup matches. The former Footballer of the Year was visibly impressed by the flawless pitch and striking orange seating, which will be able to accommodate 97 400 fans.“They really did a great job on this stadium. I have been to many stadiums before, but this is very big and so great. To be able to enter this stadium is so beautiful. I feel inspired to play here, but unfortunately my time has passed,” he said.Construction workers, who had filled the venue’s upper rows to catch a glimpse of the football great, cheered and chanted: “Maradona! Maradona!” as he demonstrated his effortless ball skills.Later the coach swapped signed national jerseys with Danny Jordaan, head of the 2010 Fifa World Cup local organising committee, and then broke away from the crowd to congratulate the workers on stadium.“I think this visit by Maradona gives South Africans an insight into the excitement that will be generated by the World Cup,” Jordaan said.“He didn’t go to any black tie events, he went into the townships where he said he felt safe, not threatened … he embraced people. Maradona’s contribution off the pitch has been very significant.”After the coach left the stadium, Jordaan spoke to journalists about World Cup safety fears: “We ended with the final draw on 4 December, and the international visitors left. Now it’s the 21st January – and absolutely nothing has happened. The English cricket team was here, and they were very happy; and now Maradona’s come, and he’s also happy – that should speak for itself.”last_img read more

first_imgTags:#crowdsourcing#web In today’s blog post by Chief Strategy Officer Mike Maser, Digg announced that it will be rolling out its beta ad program later this week. In addition to the community’s existing banner ads, the company is launching an initial set of ads to appear in rotation with regular content. From here, users will interact with the ads in the same way they interact with articles – by digging, burying and commenting on them. Advertising with a high number of Diggs will fetch lower ad revenue and buried advertisers will be charged more. ReadWriteWeb covered Kevin Rose’s suggestion for this advertising system in April. The program will be launched this week for testing to a select few users before making a public release. Says Maser to the community, “The success of this system depends on your participation and feedback, as it will help advertisers to create the best possible experience for the Digg community. Our goal with Digg Ads is to encourage advertisers to create content as compelling as organic Digg stories, and to give you more control over which ads you see on Digg. The official June announcement of the Digg ad program received more than 400 comments within the community, and surprisingly many of them are very positive. While critics argue that the ads will simply be buried and advertisers will stop paying for placement, others called this “marketing democracy.” A few commenters pointed to the fact that they already use Adblock – a Firefox extension that allows users to filter out advertising content. Nevertheless, others chastise Adblock users for not supporting the community they enjoy. In a community as opinionated as Digg’s, it will be interesting to see how the first users react to this new play for revenue. Top Reasons to Go With Managed WordPress Hostinglast_img read more

first_imgInsulation can serve as a vapor barrierA key difference between open- and closed-cell foam is how well they stop the migration of moisture into wall and roof cavities. Icynene’s closed-cell foam has a vapor permeance of less than 1 perm at a thickness of 2.4 inches, the company says, making it a Class II vapor retarder.Open-cell foams are not considered Class II vapor retarders at any thickness. The company says the closed-cell insulation will be helpful in exterior wall cavities, in floor assemblies over damp crawlspaces, and in walls or floors below grade where controlling dampness is important. And with a higher R-value per inch than open-cell foam, it also will be useful to builders trying to get high performance at lower thicknesses.Improved performance comes with a higher price. Icynene didn’t offer estimates of how much more expensive ProSeal Eco would be, suggesting instead to use the dealer locator on its web site and get a local quote.A Peabody, Massachusetts, installer said that filling a 2×6 wall with Icynene open-cell foam would cost about $2 per square foot, while ProSeal Eco would cost about $3.50 per square foot. Icynene has rolled out a new type of closed-cell spray insulation that uses water as a blowing agent, eliminating the global-warming potential of the hydrofluorocarbon (HFC) blowing agents in most closed-cell foams.ProSeal Eco is described as a medium-density foam, weighing 2.2 pounds per cubic foot when cured, roughly four times as dense as Icynene’s open-cell foam and about equal to other types of closed-cell foam.Icynene says the insulation has an R-value of 4.9 per inch, compared to R-6 to R-6.5 for closed-cell foams. But, the company adds, ProSeal Eco will show less of a drop in R-value over time than foams made with HFC blowing agents.Icynene’s open-cell foam has an R-value of 3.7 per inch. Using those values, a 2×6 wall filled with conventional closed-cell foam would have an R-value of 35.75 (between the studs at the middle of the wall) while a wall sprayed with ProSeal Eco would have an R-value of 26.95. A wall filled with Icynene open-cell foam would have an R-value of just over 20.last_img read more

first_imgWho takes the action is as important as the action being taken. Two people can both call on the same prospective client. One of them can have deep business acumen and situational knowledge, while the other lacks both of these. The results will be as different as you might imagine, with one succeeding, and the other failing. It’s important that you be someone who knows how to create value and make a difference. Two salespeople can both have a face-to-face sales call with that same dream client. One of them is an exceptionally good listener, is prepared, and has carefully crafted questions that will help them and their prospect discover things together. The other is winging it, hoping to make a connection. The professional always outperforms the amateur. Two different people both want success. One is an optimistic, abundance-minded person who believes that opportunity is limitless. This person believes that their success is going to take hard work and dedication, but that that success is inevitable. The other person is a scarcity-minded person who waits for luck to find them and bestow upon them her riches. Your attitude and your belief systems are your operating system. It can’t be full of viruses.Actions alone doesn’t always dictate the results. The reason some people produce better results is that they have done the work to become someone who can generate those better results. They worked harder and longer than others were willing to so they could become a person who can produce the results you see, even though you didn’t see the years of work they put into chipping away at the parts that weren’t the best version of themselves.Who you are counts for more than what you do. You have to be someone worth buying from, someone worth doing business with, someone who acts a positive force. Character counts for far more than any tactics, tricks, or hacks you might be tempted to employ to produce better results faster. Get the Free eBook! Learn how to sell without a sales manager. first_imgOdisha’s ruling Biju Janata Dal on Wednesday won the Patkura Assembly constituency by defeating the BJP. The Congress finished third in the election held on July 20.BJD nominee Sabitri Agarwalla defeated BJP’s Bijoy Mohapatra by 17,920 votes. Ms. Agarwalla bagged 96,017 votes, while Mr. Mohapatra got 78,097 votes and lost yet another battle to enter the State Assembly for another term. Jayanta Mohanty of the Congress secured only 2,104 votes by the end of last round of counting of votes. Mr. Mohapatra, who won from Patkura four times – 1980, 1985, 1990 and 1995, was a member of Biju Patnaik’s Council of Ministers in his last term. Although he was a founder-member of the BJD, Mr. Mohapatra failed to contest the 2000 polls when the party cancelled his ticket at the last minute. He lost all elections in subsequent years. In 2001, he formed the Odisha Gana Parishad, which he later merged with the Nationalist Congress Party. He joined the BJP when the NCP turned an ally of the BJD before the 2009 polls. Often referred as Chief Minister and BJD president Naveen Patnaik’s bête noire, Mr. Mohapatra quit the BJP in November last, but returned to the party again before this year’s general election.Polling in Patkura, which was initially scheduled for April 29 as part of the simultaneous Lok Sabha and Assembly elections, was first adjourned due to the death of the Biju Janata Dal nominee – Ms. Agarwalla’s husband Bed Prakash Agarwalla. The Election Commission of India then fixed May 19 as the next date of polling, but it was postponed again due to Cyclone Fani that hit the State’s coast on May 3.The seat witnessed high-voltage campaigning, with senior leaders from the three major parties holding meetings to woo the voters. Mr. Patnaik also campaigned for Ms. Agarwalla for a day apart from a majority of his Ministers and party MLAs.last_img read more

first_imgThe Maharashtra Anti Terrorism Squad (ATS) has arrested a key accused from Hyderabad in the illegal telephone exchange racket that was busted last month. The ATS seized over 2,000 SIM cards and other equipment indicating that the scope of the racket was much larger than previously estimated. The racket was busted on August 9 with the arrest of seven people from various locations in Mumbai, Navi Mumbai and Thane. As many as 513 SIM cards and nine SIM boxes were seized from them. A preliminary estimate of the loss to the exchequer due to calls routed through such exchanges was put at ₹37.50 crore. A senior ATS officer said, “During the course of our investigation, we found that a prime accused in the racket had fled the city along with a large quantity of equipment. We had been tracking this person for the past month. On Wednesday, we traced him to Hyderabad, from where he was arrested.” The accused, identified as Rafiq Allatur, had in his possession 2,126 SIM cards purchased from various service providers, 46 SIM boxes and six SIM pool machines, which were used for routing many calls at the same time. The officer said, “We also seized four desktop computers, eight laptops and eight routers. The sheer quantity of the equipment indicates that the racket was much more organised and widespread than we had initially thought. Investigations so far have established that the racket was active for at least an year, during which time, we believe that the loss to the national exchequer amounted to ₹150 crore.” The ATS has also found that Mr. Allatur was wanted by the Mumbai Police Crime Branch in a similar case registered in 2017. The officer said, “The scale of the racket can also be gauged from the fact that the accused used 2000 PRI lines in the racket. A single PRI line enables a small call centre to route a large number of calls at the same time through the internet.” According to investigating officers, the accused would route calls made by Indians staying in the Middle East to their kin staying in India to avoid paying the high international tariff. As calls made through the SIM box technology cannot be tracked or traced, the bigger concern for law enforcement agencies is the possibility of this technology being used by criminal or terrorist elements, officers said.last_img read more

first_imgIt has been little over a year that Mehtab Hossain made his comeback to the senior national team after a stellar season for East Bengal.Having made his senior team debut during the SAFF Championships in 2005, the midfielder’s international career has been blighted by injuries and despite performing well at the club level, he failed to make the cut for the Asian Cup in 2011.Now with a new chief coach – Dutchman Wim Koevermans at the helm, Mehtab is aiming to give his best so that India can complete a hat-trick of Nehru Cup titles, even though players like Bhaichung Bhutia, Climax Lawrence and Mahesh Gawli have retired.”Some of the young players who performed well in the AFC under-22 championship have the potential to succeed at a higher level. It is hard to replace a Bhaichung or Climax but players such as Manandeep Singh have to take up the challenge,” Mehtab told Mail Today.Mehtab, who recently returned from Scotland after undergoing trials at Airdrie FC, said that the experience of playing in foreign conditions benefited him immensely. He says that the team management was impressed with him but he was not able to procure a work permit.”Playing in Scotland was a great experience. The facilities and the environment are excellent and the coaching staff at Airdrie was impressed with my skills. But I was not able to join them because of work permit issues. But I have got assurance from East Bengal that they would support me if I get a chance to play abroad,” Mehtab said.advertisementThe senior team has not played any tournament after the AFC Challenge Cup debacle in March and Mehtab admits that success in Nehru Cup would provide a boost. “The players know the importance of the tournament. The coach is trying to bring in a new style of play and as professional players, we have to try our best to implement his ideas on the field,” he added.last_img read more
