first_imgWASHINGTON, D.C. — Buster Posey has struggled in April before, but he’s never struggled quite like this. After undergoing August hip surgery to repair a microfracture, Posey is hitting just .200 with a .291 slugging percentage through his first 16 games following an extensive rehabilitation process.Despite consistently batting in the middle of the Giants lineup, Posey has driven in just one run thus far and admitted Wednesday he is disappointed in his early offensive results.“It’s a challenge …last_img read more

first_img29 June 2009 The 2009 Fifa Confederations Cup drew to a close at Ellis Park Stadium in Johannesburg on Sunday night in a ceremony filled with music, colour, light and dance. But the passion reflected in the photos of fans, beamed onto a giant sphere floating above the pitch, was not staged. The photographs, of the fans that filled South Africa’s four host stadiums during Fifa’s “Festival of Continental Champions”, reflected a nation that came together in a tournament that has given the country many reasons to smile. As Nelson Mandela watched his great-granddaughter Zenani bringing the Fifa Confederations Cup trophy out onto the pitch following a thrilling final between Brazil and the USA, no doubt he was smiling too. For over the past two weeks South Africa has shown the world, once again, what it is capable of. It has also shown that the opportunity South Africa has been given to host the 2010 Fifa World Cup is about more than stadiums, pitches, roads and airports. It’s about people, and working together for a common goal. It is about reasons to smile and cry and make some very loud noise. It is about the joy that comes from being part of 14 days of thrilling football. “I have loved this tournament,” said 12-year-old Zenani, granddaughter of Nelson Mandela’s youngest daughter, Zindzi. “It has been so much fun – and Bafana Bafana have been playing, like, wow!” As the stadium went dark on Sunday night, and the vuvuzelas went quiet, the melodic sounds of Africa filled the air. The voices of 150 choir members and the beats of 150 drummers bid the fans and the watching world goodbye. But for the country, and the continent, this was just the beginning. In less than a year’s time, South Africa and Africa will welcome 32 teams, hundreds of thousands of fans and millions of television viewers back for the big one, the 2010 Fifa World Cup – and the drama, and the celebrations, will begin in earnest!Source: 2010 Fifa World Cup South Africa Organising Committeelast_img read more

first_imgSignificant amounts of sunshine and good, prevalent wind conditions have given South Africa the perfect opportunity to diversify its energy generation plan, moving away from a reliance on fossil fuels towards “green” renewable energy.Given its favourable climate conditions, South Africa is more than adequately suited to take advantage of wind and solar energy. With almost 100 projects across the country, either fully operational or in the planning stages, South Africa has an opportunity to use renewable energy as an economy grower. Pictured is the Darling Wind Farm on the Western Cape coast. (Image: Wikipedia)CD AndersonIn line with the South African government’s official outline towards a cleaner economy, taking advantage of renewable energy, in the form of solar and wind power, and building private-public partnerships are key discussions at the World Economic Forum: Africa 2017, being held in Durban, South Africa from 3 to 5 May 2017.Renewable energy plays an important role in powering the country and developing its economy.South Africa currently has almost 100 renewable energy projects either fully operational or at various build stages to be completed over the next five to 10 years. Projects, while focused predominately on wind and solar energy, include biomass (plant photosynthesis energy) and hydro-electric ventures. Of the 100 projects, 53 up and running enterprises focus on solar and wind, with a combined energy capacity of more than 4,000MW.The work being done is the product of co-operation between the government, the private technology sector, and research and science bodies. Here is an infographic featuring nine flagship wind and solar projects around South Africa:Source: Energy.org.za, WEF Africa 2017Would you like to use this article in your publication or on your website? first_imgIt looks like the first runner has crossed the finish line in the race to bringing background location functionality to the iPhone, and the winner is Loopt, an early entry in the location-based services arena.Aside from multitasking (or pseudo-multitasking, if you will) and those helpful organizer folders, background location was one of the most anticipated features of iOS 4, and Loopt clearly shows us why – even though it’s just the tip of the background-location iceberg.Persistent location means one thing – you don’t need to interact with your iPhone and let it know that you want it to check your location and give you information based on that data. Instead, you can allow your iPhone to consistently monitor your location in various apps and when it comes across a certain set of conditions, notify you. In the case of Loopt, this means that you don’t have to walk around town checking in at every location you go. As Kim-Mai Cutler of Venture Beat writes, “users can now continuously share where they are with specific friends so they don’t have to constantly “check-in” to places. If a friend happens to be nearby, the app will send you a push notification alerting you. (They can still do check-ins for acquaintances and a broader group of friends, however.)”As we wrote when we first heard about background location, the “list of ideas for background location are endless”, from time- and place-specific advertising to the types of notifications we’ll see from Loopt. Something like Urbanspon, so you can know when deals pop up around you for happy hour? Or maybe a traffic notification app that can alert you to a jam on the highway your driving ahead? What if Craigsphone could look up apartments as you travel around town and let you know when you near one meeting your requirements? Outside of the LBS arena, what apps are you excited about having access to your location in the background? mike melanson Related Posts Tags:#Apple#Location#web Why Tech Companies Need Simpler Terms of Servic…center_img Top Reasons to Go With Managed WordPress Hosting 8 Best WordPress Hosting Solutions on the Market A Web Developer’s New Best Friend is the AI Wai…last_img read more

first_imgWho takes the action is as important as the action being taken. Two people can both call on the same prospective client. One of them can have deep business acumen and situational knowledge, while the other lacks both of these. The results will be as different as you might imagine, with one succeeding, and the other failing. It’s important that you be someone who knows how to create value and make a difference. Two salespeople can both have a face-to-face sales call with that same dream client. One of them is an exceptionally good listener, is prepared, and has carefully crafted questions that will help them and their prospect discover things together. The other is winging it, hoping to make a connection. The professional always outperforms the amateur. Two different people both want success. One is an optimistic, abundance-minded person who believes that opportunity is limitless. This person believes that their success is going to take hard work and dedication, but that that success is inevitable. The other person is a scarcity-minded person who waits for luck to find them and bestow upon them her riches. Your attitude and your belief systems are your operating system. It can’t be full of viruses.Actions alone doesn’t always dictate the results. The reason some people produce better results is that they have done the work to become someone who can generate those better results. They worked harder and longer than others were willing to so they could become a person who can produce the results you see, even though you didn’t see the years of work they put into chipping away at the parts that weren’t the best version of themselves.Who you are counts for more than what you do. You have to be someone worth buying from, someone worth doing business with, someone who acts a positive force. Character counts for far more than any tactics, tricks, or hacks you might be tempted to employ to produce better results faster. Get the Free eBook! Learn how to sell without a sales manager. The Croatian was on the cusp of being signed from Inter Milan by Jose Mourinho two years ago.”How close was I going there? Very close,” he told The Athletic . “It was an amazing thing for me when Jose called me. It was difficult to say no to him. In fact, I really, really wanted to join him and play for United.”It was a dream of mine to play in all the big leagues. But it didn’t happen. It was painful for me. But I don’t want to go into the details. I only found out myself the real reasons two years later.” About the authorFreddie TaylorShare the loveHave your saylast_img read more

first_img‘Rest in Peace’ is a term much in popular use and is sighted characteristically on the social media portals. Whenever a known person departs for their heavenly abode, members of a particular social media group immediately take to expressing sorrow and grief and quote “RIP”. Thi has actually become a social ritual. But the person for whom this ‘RIP’ is being used has no effect from such expressions. One fails to understand what the actual usage of such expression is. Then why it is being used at all? The mind seeks an answer to this logical question. Also Read – A special kind of bondTo understand this aspect a little more in depth, one needs to understand the basics of the Sanatham Dharma which is largely in practice by the majority of people in this country. It is believed that there is only one great soul which is referred to as the “Paramatma”, the God, the Father. Each and every living creature is part of this God and ‘Atma’ present in each human and other living creatures are always eager to get attached to the ‘Parmatma’, whenever it leaves the physical form. The body is like the clothing which one keeps changing and the ‘Atma’ never dies, it never ceases to exist. Hindus and some other believers across the world subscribe to the notion of rebirth and reincarnation. At the end of one’s physical life graph, the balance sheet of the good and bad deeds decide the fate and the course of the next birth. More good deeds clocked by one during their lifetime means a better life in the following rebirth. It is directly proportional to the quality of the next life. It is the effect of ‘Karma’. Human life is the supreme one among all living beings. The ultimate ‘Moksha’ can only be attained through human life. ‘Moksha’ refers to the end of the life cycle when the soul is permanently attached to Parmatama and finally merges it with. There is no reversal here, no rebirth that one must undertake after the Moksha is attained. India is a land of Rishis, Munis, and Sadhus and noble souls always thriving to attain Moksha. Kaliyug (the age we are living in today) makes room for some dilution of the spiritual values. Nevertheless, spiritually elated people in each and every city, town, and villages of India are constantly seeking the ultimate Moksha and leading a simple and spiritually rich life towards achieving the main aim to attain Moksha by means of ‘Tapasya’. Also Read – Insider threat management”Hinduism” is arguably the oldest socio-religious way and dictum to lead life. It is rather a way of life more than a religion and is followed by Christianity and Islam. Unlike Hinduism where after death, the body the dead is burned, in Christianity and Islam, it is buried. In Hinduism, it is believed that as soon as the heart stops, the soul or the “Atma” leaves the body and gets attached to the ‘Parmatma’ or God. In Christianity and Islam, a person’s dead body is buried and both these faiths don’t believe in rebirth. Thus, the ‘Rest In Piece’ concept evolved with burial practiced in Christianity and Islam. Adaptation and exchange of good values across faiths and religious systems will improve the quality of life and enrich it. At the same time, it is to be remembered that such an exchange should not dilute or erase one’s own values or hurt one’s faith which should not be overshadowed by such adaptations. So, RIP all faiths and religions without blurring the basic tenets of one another! (The writer is a senior Veteran Officer of IAF, and former Additional Director General, Prasar Bharti. Columbus Crew vs. Real Salt LakeThursday, 8pm at Crew StadiumGame 1: RSL 1, Crew 0Players to watchColumbusForward Guillermo Barros Schelotto.  Because the Crew are entering the game in need of two goals to advance, Crew coach Robert Warzycha must employ his top goal scorer if the Crew wish to advance.Real Salt Lake Goalkeeper Nick Rimando.Real Salt Lake knows that the Crew will be pulling out all the stops when it comes to scoring goals. Rimando will surely face an onslaught for the Crew forwards, especially if the game is scoreless late.Key to the MatchWith the Crew already in a one-goal hole, Warzycha must employ his top goal scoring lineup. They don’t have the luxury of playing their usual game, as they must score at least two goals to advance. The Columbus Crew are losing 1-0 in their second playoff game of the season and the referee hasn’t yet blown the opening whistle. The first-round format in the MLS Cup playoffs features a home and home series in which the winner is determined by which team scores a higher total of goals over a two-game stretch. This makes it effectively a 180-minute match where the half-time is days, not minutes. The Crew will take the field Thursday evening in the hole. Their play as of late does not easily lend itself to confidence in their ability to dig themselves out. They don’t even appear to be using all of their shovels.Columbus coach Robert Warzycha’s constant lineup shifting has been well documented this season. Last season’s MLS MVP and current Crew leading scorer, Guillermo Barros Schelotto, has been kept out of games when the opponent has artificial turf.Imagine, by way of comparison, if Jim Tressel had held Beanie Wells out of a game against Penn State because they don’t play on FieldTurf.Warzycha will need to put his best goal-scoring combination on the field without sacrificing the integrity of the defense. When asked about sitting his top goal scorer in the first match against Real Salt Lake, the Crew’s first round opponent, Warzycha simply said he wanted to try something new.“We didn’t score any goals in the last five games when they were on the field,” Warzycha said about Schelotto and Crew forward Alejandro Moreno. “I thought we’d go with a different combination.”Even the opposing coach appeared surprised by Warzycha’s decision to sit Schelotto, but that didn’t make him unhappy about the turn of events.“I don’t know what’s going on inside of their locker room,” Kreis said. “I don’t have all the information that goes into the decision, but we’re feeling good about it.”Regardless of the reason for the 1-0 victory, RSL forward Robbie Findley can smell the blood in the water.“We’ve been talking all week about this home game being our chance to get out on top,” Findley said. “Now we’ve got to go over there for a tough game, a hard-fought game, and now we’ve got to leave it all on the field.”Columbus will run onto the field at Crew Stadium Thursday night knowing they have their work cut out for them. A one-goal victory, such as they’ve recorded eight times this season, will not suffice. Fans can hope they won’t make the task more difficult on themselves by leaving their biggest producers off the field.Crew captain and defender Frankie Hejduk isn’t sounding an alarm just yet.“[Being down a goal] doesn’t change anything,” Hejduk said. “We’re going to come out firing and we’re pretty solid at home, so we’re not too worried about it.”Somebody had better start worrying about it. Otherwise, the Crew’s road to a repeat will come to an unhappy end. read more
