first_img24 July 2007South African petrochemical company Sasol has become the first in the world to register a project that uses a secondary catalyst to convert the greenhouse gas nitrous oxide into harmless nitrogen and oxygen, which could earn the company significant income through the sale of carbon credits.Sasol said in a statement on Monday that a share of the revenue derived from the carbon credit sales would be invested in local community-based sustainable development projects.A carbon credit – one credit is equivalent to a ton of carbon dioxide reduced – is a tradable permit scheme used as an incentive for countries and businesses to reduce their greenhouse gas emissions.Countries that have signed the Kyoto Protocol have fixed quotas for greenhouse emissions. The protocol’s clean development mechanism allows businesses to generate carbon credits, which can then be sold or exchanged with businesses that have exceeded their quota limits.Sasol Nitro, which commissioned its nitrous oxide emission abatement technology during the first quarter of 2007, expects to reduce greenhouse gas emissions by the equivalent of about a million tons of carbon dioxide a year.According to the company, one ton of nitrous oxide has the greenhouse impact equivalent to 310 tons of carbon dioxide. The technology will be used to reduce emissions at two nitric acid plants in Sasolburg in the Free State province and Secunda in Mpumalanga province.“This is the first time that a project using a secondary catalyst has been registered as a clean development mechanism project in terms of the Kyoto Protocol,” said Sasol Chemical Businesses’ group general manager Reiner Groh. The project offered “significant environmental benefits for Sasol, our local communities and South Africa,” Groh added.Sasol said it had developed the project with assistance from MGM International, a specialist in the development of greenhouse gas emission reduction projects worldwide, and Heraues, a provider of catalyst technology for nitric acid production facilities.SouthAfrica.info reporter Want to use this article in your publication or on your website?See: Using SAinfo materiallast_img read more

first_imgSouth Africa has won the top global award at the United Nations Investment Promotion Awards for its excellence in boosting investment sectors that have social and economic benefits and help countries meet the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).The awards, organised by the United Nations Conference on Trade and Development (UNCTAD), honours investment promotions agencies and their governments for their achievements, but also showcases best practices in attracting investment into SDG-related projects that can inspire investment promotion practitioners in developing and developed countries. The award was presented at a high-profile ceremony in the Assembly Hall of the Palais des Nations, Geneva, Switzerland, at the grand opening of the World Investment Forum yesterday.              South Africa was also recently named as the Global Destination of the Year at the 2018 Global Sourcing Association Awards ceremony alongside the Global Sourcing Summit in Cape Town. This award was South Africa’s fifth since 2012, and is further accolade and recognition of South Africa’s value proposition and credible offering that combines global best practice, a talented and scalable labour pool with government support to attract international outsourcing work into South Africa.“This prestigious global award indicates that South Africa’s industrial development is playing an important role towards its economic growth and our investment drive is already starting to make a significant contribution towards achieving its sustainable development goals. InvestSA is now globally recognised to compete in investment promotion and facilitation of large scale investments. As part of President Cyril Ramaphosa’s mobilisation drive to attract investments, these global awards signify and demonstrate that government is committed to improving its investment climate and service to investors,” says Davies                     The prestigious global award was presented to InvestSA for its role in facilitating two pioneering waste-to-nutrient recycling projects to up-cycle organic waste into natural, sustainable high-protein animal feed. Each project will offer much-needed jobs in local communities and is expected to save an annual 80 000 metric tons of carbon dioxide emissions by diverting organic waste from the landfill. The award was presented by the President of the 73rd session of the United Nations General Assembly, Ms María Fernanda Espinosa Garcés.Minister Davies says that the award is a commendable international recognition that partnerships play an important role in boosting investments in sectors as the award is for an intergovernmental projects facilitated together with the Gauteng provincial government, Technology Innovation Agency (TIA) and GreenCape.“These awards are indicative that our investment mobilisation efforts are making a valuable contribution to social and economic development. We are enhancing our investment facilitation service and InvestSA is able to fast track, unblock and reduce red tape in government through our one-stop shop approach,” says Davies.Issued by: The Department of Trade and Industrylast_img read more

first_imgShare Facebook Twitter Google + LinkedIn Pinterest Last summer, farmers in the Midwest got an unwelcome surprise after planting native seed on Conservation Reserve Program acres. Palmer amaranth, the aggressive and hard-to-kill weed, had established in droves. As a possible solution, some states declared Palmer a noxious weed, which prohibits its sale and transport.“I’ve had seed growers call me,” said Pat Tranel, molecular weed scientist in the crop sciences department at the University of Illinois. “Their businesses are up in the air because of this. Unless they have a way to certify their product is Palmer-free, they can’t sell it.”The typical testing method involves growing a sample of seeds until the plants are large enough to be identified, but this is a slow and potentially unreliable process.“It all takes a long time, and sometimes the seeds don’t germinate during the test,” Tranel said. “Alternatively, there’s a company that will test individual seeds using DNA sequencing, but they’re charging $100 per seed. It’s not cost-effective.”Tranel and graduate student Brent Murphy developed a way around these issues. Their low-cost method can identify Palmer amaranth DNA from within a mixed sample without having to grow the plants. The assay, which uses a method known as quantitative PCR, can detect genetic variations unique to Palmer even when flooded with samples from closely related species, including waterhemp.“Palmer, redroot pigweed, waterhemp — they all have tiny black seeds that basically look the same. We needed a way to efficiently extract DNA from pooled seed samples and, if it’s present, identify Palmer,” Tranel said.Once Tranel and Murphy developed this assay, they worked with U of I Extension’s Plant Clinic to optimize the test for mixed seed samples. Diagnostic outreach Extension specialist Diane Plewa and Plant Clinic technician Elizabeth Phillippi began trying different methods to extract DNA from seed. The assay is very sensitive, but if DNA is not correctly extracted from a lone Palmer amaranth seed in a mixed sample, it won’t be detected.“The trick is to make sure every seed is ground up during the extraction process,” Plewa said. The researchers were able to consistently detect a single Palmer amaranth seed when mixed with 99 waterhemp seeds, and they believe the assay could achieve even greater sensitivity with additional refinement. The Plant Clinic has optimized a protocol for commercial testing of seed lots.“We have a test that we feel very confident in,” Plewa said. “We are offering the service now, for $50 per sample.”For more information, call 217-649-3941 or visit the Plant Clinic website. The article, “A quantitative assay for Amaranthus palmeri identification,” is published in Pest Management Science. Authors Brent Murphy and Pat Tranel are housed in the Department of Crop Sciences at U of I, and Diane Plewa, Elizabeth Phillippi, and Suzanne Bissonnette are from U of I Extension’s Plant Clinic. The work was supported by a USDA National Institute of Food and Agriculture Hatch grant.last_img read more

first_imgShare Facebook Twitter Google + LinkedIn Pinterest By Xinjie Tong and Lingying ZhaoThe Ohio egg production industry is a significant economic sector in the state and is responsible for creation of 12,503 jobs and $438 million in annual earnings. Technology advances in egg production facilities over the past decades have enabled very efficient operations of large-scale layer houses, that can typically host 100,000 to 250,000 hens with stacked cages, automated manure-belts, feed and water delivery, egg transport, and mechanical ventilation systems. In these larger layer houses, ventilation plays a crucial role in maintaining a proper indoor air conditions and for disease control for hen health and efficient egg production. However, it has been a challenge to achieve the comfort and health standards with existing ventilation systems. At The Ohio State University, an innovative ventilation system has been designed at the air quality and bioenvironmental lab, which can potentially improve indoor environment and limit disease outbreaks in layer houses. Ventilation systemsThe most commonly used ventilation systems in layer houses are tunnel ventilation and cross ventilation. With a cross ventilation system, air enters a layer house through air inlets under the eaves or on the ceiling and exits through exhaust fans on side walls. It creates relatively uniform airflow inside the house, but is not able to effectively remove heat produced by hens in the summer. To abate heat stress, tunnel ventilation system has been widely adopted in layer houses, with which fresh air enters a layer house from one end of the house and is exhausted by fans located on the other end of the house. The tunnel ventilation provides a wind chill effect with high-speed air flow across animals and thus can make them feel cool in hot weather conditions and effectively alleviate heat stress in summer. As air travels from the inlets to the exhausts of a layer house with the tunnel ventilation system, it absorbs heat and moisture generated from hens. One big drawback of tunnel ventilation systems is that it results in large gradients of air temperature and relative humidity, air pollutant concentrations along the airflow pathways, and will make the air cool and dry near the air inlets but hot and moist near the air outlets. This non-uniform thermal condition is not desirable because it not only puts hens near outlets at higher risks, but also results in differentiation in hen performance, such as various sized eggs. It is therefore imperative to fully understand the thermal environment of large-scale commercial layer houses and develop an innovative ventilation system in order to manage heat stress problems accordingly and effectively. Heat stress problems in layer housesHeat stress is a common problem in layer houses because hens stocked in high density form intensive heat sources and the state-of-the-art ventilation system, tunnel ventilation, still cannot uniformly remove heat. Poultry are homoeothermic with a core body temperature maintained at 41.2 degrees C to 42.2 degrees C by thermoregulatory mechanisms in a comfortable environment. As the indoor temperature rises above the poultry comfort zone during hot summer months, hens start experiencing heat stress, where they usually spend less time feeding and moving, and more time drinking, resting, and panting. Egg production is also impaired under heat stress (i.e., annual losses of $61 to 98 million nationwide) through decreased egg production rate, reduced egg quality, and increased hen mortality. Heat stress problems will be further worsened due to increasing events of extreme temperature and heavier precipitation. Disease outbreaks and virus transmission in layer houses. Disease outbreaks are another big threat to the poultry industry. In 2015, the highly pathogenic H5 avian flu infected about 57 million birds in the U.S., resulting in a disastrous loss to the layer and turkey industries. Because the flu spread quickly, researchers suspect that the viruses were possibly airborne, meaning that their transmissions can be possibly driven by airflow. With the current ventilation systems, air mixing causes concerns about possible disease transmission. Once a hen has the virus, the ventilation airflow will transport the air polluted by that hen, and pass through many other hens located in different areas of the house before being removed via exhaust fans. In other words, the mixing ventilation possibly facilitates the transmission of viruses among hens and fastens the spread of the disease. Development of a new ventilationTo reduce economic losses due to heat stress and disease outbreaks, we are developing an upward airflow displacement ventilation (UADV) system for commercial manure-belt layer houses. In this new system, fresh air is uniformly supplied from air ducts located beneath the cages; it directly reaches hens and is heated by hens; the heated air will then escape the cages and flow upward in the aisles due to the buoyancy effect and suction caused by exhaust fans installed on the roof; air is finally exhausted out of the house through these exhaust fans. With this new ventilation system, an upward airflow can be formed inside the house and the polluted air traveling upward in aisles will be directly removed by exhaust fans on the roof without passing through other cages. This ventilation design allows for the shortest pathways of contaminated air and provides efficient removal of heat, moisture, air pollutants, and viruses compared to existing tunnel and cross ventilation systems. Performance of the new ventilation systemThe performance of the new UADV system was preliminarily simulated using a Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) model developed by an Ohio State University research group. Using CFD models, indoor thermal conditions and disease transmission were simulated under different weather conditions with both the new UADV system and the existing tunnel ventilation system. It was found that the new UADV system provided more uniform thermal conditions with less heat stress compared to the existing tunnel ventilation. By using the new UADV system, heat stress at a danger level could be reduced from 8.7% to 0.7% in summer and cold stress could be reduced from 18.3% to 5.8% in winter. The new system also reduces the disease transmission from 29.8% to 2.7% in summer and from 61.4% to 44.3% in winter in the presumed scenario. Development statusResearchers, Dr. Lingying Zhao, an extension engineer and professor, Xinjie Tong, a Ph.D. student, and Dr. Sewoon Hong, a postdoctoral research associate at The Air Quality and Bio-Environmental Engineering Lab (AQBEL) of The Ohio State University, have submitted a provisional patent application for this new ventilation design. Further efforts are needed to test the UADV system in commercial laying hen farms. Any feedback and inputs from poultry farmers about the new ventilation systems will be very much appreciated. In summary, maintaining a comfortable and safe indoor environment of layer houses is a necessity, but a challenging task that cannot be fulfilled by the existing ventilation systems. The heat stress and disease outbreaks have caused significant economic losses. Ohio State researchers have developed an innovative upward airflow displacement ventilation (UADV) system for abating heat stress and limiting disease transmission among the hens. It can effectively improve uniform thermal conditions in layer house for abatement of both heat and cold stress. It also has the potential to limit pathogen transmission in layer houses. Further research is needed to test the UADV system in commercial laying hen farms. Xinjie Tong, Graduate Research Associate, Department of Food, Agricultural and Biological Engineering and Lingying Zhao, Professor and Extension Ag. first_imgHoping to lure cloud developers to the iCloud platform, Apple on Monday unveiled CloudKit, which gives developers “effectively free, with limits” storage for server-based apps. “You’ve gotta pay somebody to host it all,” said Craig Federighi, Apple’s senior vice president for software engineering. Before CloudKit, that somebody was Amazon, Google, or Microsoft. At first glance, it sure sounds like it. CloudKit scales based on the number of users, and developers get up to a petabyte of assets an application relies on (such as images, user data, and other resources), one terabyte of database storage, and “all the bandwidth you could use,” Federighi said. Apple details what it gives developers free: How Intelligent Data Addresses the Chasm in Cloud Serverless Backups: Viable Data Protection for … Related Posts Sync, a serious problem for iCloud developers currently, is another issue Apple promises to tackle:The core idea behind iCloud is to eliminate explicit synchronization between devices. A user never needs to think about syncing and your app never interacts directly with iCloud servers. When you adopt iCloud storage APIs as described in this document, changes appear automatically on all the devices attached to an iCloud account. Your users get safe, consistent, and transparent access to their personal content everywhere.Developers are thrilled at the prospect of integrating their apps more tightly with iOS and iCloud.  “With extensibility in iOS 8, we’re excited to bring our users more options and the ability to seamlessly access all of their Box files right from within their favorite apps, eliminating the need to create additional copies,” Aaron Levie, Box founder and CEO said in a statement. “This is a major milestone for the Post-PC enterprise, and a bellwether moment for openness. “In yesterday’s keynote, when Federighi demonstrated saving a document to the cloud, the options for cloud storage included iCloud, Microsoft OneDrive, and Box. Noticeably absent from this cloud storage integration? Dropbox.Could it be in part because of Apple’s history with Dropbox? Steve Jobs notoriously called it a “feature,” and integration with iCloud certainly makes it look that way. Or could it be because Samsung bundles Dropbox with its devices, and gives away free storage? I contacted Dropbox for comment; a spokeswoman said that “we don’t have anything to share at this time.”What’s The Security?Apple also talked up the security aspects of iCloud. Via iCloud authentication, customers can sign in with their iCloud Apple ID without sharing personal information. In typical Apple fashion, it glossed over details, such as the type of security CloudKit uses for user authentication. The iCloud Design Guide barely mentions authentication. However, an Apple  support knowledge base article divulges a little more:When you access iCloud services using Apple’s built-in apps (for example, Mail, Contacts, and Calendar apps on iOS or OS X), authentication is handled using a secure token. Using secure tokens eliminates the need to store your iCloud password on devices and computers. Even if you choose to use a third-party application to access your iCloud data, your username and password are sent over an encrypted SSL connection.Developers are still waiting for the details, but initially, several developers commented that free storage is not enough in a cross-platform development world. Top Reasons to Go With Managed WordPress Hosting Cloud Hosting for WordPress: Why Everyone is Mo… jodi mardesich Cian Clark, a developer, blogged that CloudKit sounds great, but cautioned about one “glaringly obvious point” that developers shouldn’t ignore—the potential for vendor lock-in:Storing data with CloudKit comes with huge risks of Vendor Lock-In which should not be overlooked, and as the data storage needs of an application expand, it’s worth considering the use of an mBaaS rather than relying on Cloud Kit alone for storage needs. If the queue for the CloudKit presentation at WWDC is any indication, developers are anxious to learn more. This sounds pretty generous compared to Amazon’s free tier for its cloud services, or Google’s free tier. It’s not a direct comparison, however. Amazon limits its free services to a specific number of hours, which Apple doesn’t, and its free tier data storage for various services is measured in megabytes and gigabytes, while Apple is talking about offering up to a petabyte for assets and a terabyte for storage. Googles gives developers up to 5GB of storage. However, despite the virtually free cloud services, Apple isn’t really competing with Amazon or Google in the war for cloud developers. What Apple appears to be doing is keeping the iOS developer ecosystem vibrant, said Quinton Alsbury, co-founder and president of product innovation for Roambi.“I really think it’s an attempt to keep innovation iOS centric, and keep the new ideas and new developers doing their first versions on iOS,” he told me. Most developers, especially small shops, write their first apps for iOS. Not having to worry about server-side components, such as authentication, “makes it even easier,” Alsbury said.CloudKit “helps developers eliminate the need for writing server code and maintaining servers,” Apple said in a press release. CloudKit gives developers a client-side programming model, and server side functions like app logic, iCloud authentication, asset storage, database storage, search, and notifications, Federighi said.In its iCloud Design Guide, Apple lays out its approach:A user never needs to think about syncing and your app never interacts directly with iCloud servers.Apple’s new appeal to cloud developers harkens back to its old, familiar mantra: “It just works.” That’s a great pitch for consumers, but will it appeal to developers, especially those who expect to tinker with server instances, virtual machines, and operating systems on cloud platforms like Amazon’s, Google’s, or Microsoft’s?A pre-release iCloud Design Guide for incorporating iCloud into your app explains the benefits of designing for iCloud:iCloud is a free service that lets users access their personal content on all their devices—wirelessly and automatically via Apple ID. iCloud does this by combining network-based storage with dedicated APIs, supported by full integration with the operating system. Apple provides server infrastructure, backup, and user accounts, so you can focus on building great iCloud-enabled apps. Tags:#Apple#cloud#CloudKit#WWDC 2014 last_img read more

first_imgThe crisis within the ruling Naga People’s Front (NPF) government in Nagaland has further deepened with Chief Minister Shurhozelie Liezietsu sacking 10 of his parliamentary secretaries following a demand for his removal, an official said on July 9, 2017.The development comes as former Chief Minister T.R. Zeliang on July 8, 2017 wrote to Governor P.B. Acharya and staked claim to form a new government. He claimed he has the support of 33 NPF legislators and seven Independent legislators. In the wake of the demand for his removal, Mr. Liezietsu, who is also the NPF chief, terminated four NPF legislators and six Independent legislators, as parliamentary secretaries. The Nagaland government issued notifications terminating the appointment of Mr. Zeliang as Advisor (Finance) and Mr. Nuklotoshi as Advisor to Chief Minister.Apart from sacking the legislators, the NPF Disciplinary Action Committee which met on July 8, 2017 also suspended 10 legislators as primary and active members of the party. Those suspended include Home Minister Yanthungo Patton, Power Minister Kipili Sangtam, National Highway and Political Affairs Minister G. Kaito Aye, Forest and Environment Minister Imkong L. Imchen, besides, Shetoyi, Nuklutoshi, Deo Nukhu, Naiba Konyak, Benjongliba and Mr. Zeliang. Mr. Zeliang along with 41 legislators are camping at Borgos resort in Kaziranga National Park in Assam to discuss the transition of power. “All 41 of us are intact and we are waiting only for Governor Acharya to invite Zeliang to form the government,” Forest and Environment Minister Imkong L. Imchen told IANS.“We don’t care about (suspension from the party) it because those people who have signed the suspension order do not have the grassroots support,” Mr. Imchen said, while refusing to divulge further.Governor Acharya is in Maharashtra and he is expected to return to Nagaland in a few days. The fresh political instability has come at a time when Mr. Liezietsu is gearing up for the July 29 byelection from the Northern Angami-I assembly constituency. Mr. Liezietsu has however voiced confidence that the crisis within the NPF would be resolved at the earliest.Mr. Liezietsu was sworn in as Chief Minister on February 22, 2017 after Mr. Zeliang’s resignation following a violent protest by tribal groups who were opposed to his move to hold civic polls with 33% reservation for women. The Chief Minister said that he was deeply pained by the recent disturbing developments affecting the normal functioning of the government.“The current issue is within the NPF party and will be resolved at the earliest to bring about normalcy in the state. The mandate of the people will be respected and the present crisis will be resolved in the larger interest of the people of the state,” Mr. Liezietsu stated.Noting that the NPF-led government will complete its full term, the beleaguered Chief Minister appealed to the people of the state to remain calm.In his letter to the Governor, Mr. Zeliang said “The legislators also urged the present Chief Minister Shurhozelie Liezietsu, who is a non-legislator, to resign and pave way for me (Mr. Zeliang) to take over as the Chief Minister.”Claiming support of 34 (including himself) out of the 47 NPF legislators, he also told Mr. Acharya that seven Independent legislators have also affirmed their support in his favour. The legislators wanted him to continue as leader of NPF legislature party and also authorised him to stake claim to form a new NPF-led Democratic Alliance of Nagaland government. In the truncated 59-member Assembly, the ruling Democratic Alliance of Nagaland coalition government comprises 47 NPF legislators, four BJP and eight Independents. The NPF MLAs include the 10 suspended legislators.Interestingly, Mr. Zeliang has even warmed up to his once bitter rival Neiphiu Rio, a three-time Nagaland Chief Minister. Mr. Rio, the lone Lok Sabha member from Nagaland, was suspended a couple of years back for “anti-party activities”, particularly against Mr. Zeliang.last_img read more
