141610.20 132040.80 That kind of normalcy is not why we tune in to the tournament! Annoyed that I watched 12 consecutive hours of basketball with so little chaos to show for it, I started to wonder whether we have overblown expectations of unpredictability in March Madness. Are most days actually like Thursday, but we only remember the last-second shots and the scrappy Cinderellas? No — Thursday really was different. The first day of March Madness was anything but mad. Better-seeded teams went 14-2 on the day, and even the “surprises” were relatively easy to see coming: The higher-seeded teams’ two losses came at the hands of Middle Tennessee State (the South’s No. 12 seed) and Xavier (No. 11 in the West), both of which were among the most popular upset picks of the first round. (Our March Madness predictions had each game as a toss-up.) All told, the NCAA hadn’t seen a chalkier opening day since 2000, when the superior seeds went 15-1 after the tournament launched.VIDEO: A No. 16 seed will win, but don’t bet on it SEEDEXPECTED UPSET RATEGAMESEXPECTED UPSETSACTUAL UPSETS 15610.10 16020.00 123641.41 Expected upset rates are based on winning percentage in all first-round games for each seed from 1985-2016.Source: Sports-Reference.com 103910.40 OPENING DAY 2017 950%21.00 Total164.22 March Madness tipped off with a dose of sanity 113610.41 This year featured 2.2 fewer upsets than expected, which makes it second only to 2000 in terms of uneventful opening days during the tournament’s 64-team era. To get those numbers, I looked at the historical upset rates for each seed,1Starting in 1985, when the NCAA tournament expanded to a 64-team bracket, and going through 2016. taking into account which games were played on Thursday. But despite their disappointing record, underdogs kept the score relatively close in 2017’s opening-day games. In terms of average scoring margin, this year tied for the ninth-most-respectable showing by worse-seeded teams on an opening day of the tournament — on par with days where fans saw six or seven upsets. In other words, a lucky bounce here or there could have made all the difference for Thursday’s long shots. Maybe that means good, old-fashioned madness will be restored to its rightful place on Day 2 of the tourney. Then again, analyzing other second-day games using the same method as above suggests that Friday should be less upset-y (3.9 expected upsets) than Thursday was supposed to be. All classes are cancelled for the remainder of the day and all campuses will close. We will send updates as they become available.— Southwestern College (@swc_news) September 6, 2018CHULA VISTA (KUSI) — A report of a perceived threat that turned out to be unfounded prompted evacuations and closures of all Southwestern College campuses and related facilities Thursday. The potential security hazard led school officials to begin clearing all students and staff members from Southwestern’s main campus in Chula Vista and its four satellite locations about 9:15 a.m., college spokeswoman Lillian Leopold said. The emergency security measures were prompted by a report by one student who overheard another make a seemingly menacing statement Wednesday night, according to Leopold, who declined to describe the nature of the perceived threat.Among the facilities evacuated and closed for the day were Southwestern College Higher Education Centers in National City, Otay Mesa and San Ysidro, as well as Crown Cove Aquatic Center in Coronado.Campus employees worked with the Metropolitan Transit Service to increase bus lines that service Southwestern College, and campus police directed traffic in the parking lot of the main campus to speed up the evacuation process. In the mid-afternoon, college officials announced that law enforcement personnel had contacted and interviewed the student who reportedly made the suspicious statements and determined that he had not, in fact, issued any threat of violence, Leopold said. His name was not released. The spokeswoman declined to elaborate on the circumstances that resulted in the apparent misunderstanding. All Southwestern College facilities were scheduled to remain closed for the remainder of the day, then reopen for normal operations on Friday.Students who left vehicles at the main campus while evacuating were being allowed to retrieve them Thursday afternoon and evening. They were directed to enter the school through its H Street entrance, Leopold said.Statement from Southwestern College Superintendent/President Dr. Kindred Murillo“We are working with our College Police to investigate a credible threat that we received from a student. An indoor sky diving center with fancy wind tunnels. Before long, the concept took a dive. The place never really caught and went out of business. That’s when the City of San Diego stepped-in, and laid down $7-million dollars to take it over. The concept was well intended and clearly needed. They wanted a one stop shop for homeless services. The execution leaves a lot to be desired. “I thought this was supposed to be helping us out here. They keep promising a place to get help, I haven’t seen it”, says Roderick Bradely, formerly homeless. After a nice summer break under their belts, city leaders are back at city hall and still dealing with the issues of the homeless. They approved a deal to spend $8.5-million to keep three homeless tents open. But they delayed a vote on the *indoor sky diving* center.Insiders at city hall say there is more work to be done before taking the plunge. “If it’s not working, we could look at expanding to other parts of town. But we own the building and we’re going to try, If not, we could always sell it”, says Council Member Scott Sherman. While $7-million sounds like a lot of money, and it is, at this stage the building is worth more than that. Some say it’s worth at least $10-million. At the very least, San Diego taxpayers should not lose money on it. Posted: September 18, 2018 Dan Plante, last_img read more
