first_img28 June 2012There were mixed emotions at Johannesburg’s OR Tambo International Airport when South African couple Debbie Calitz and Bruno Pelizzari walked out of international arrivals to meet their families and friends on Wednesday. There were hugs, laughs, screams and tears from both the couple and their relatives – tears of joy and relief, and of pain and heartache symbolic of what the couple had gone through since their capture 20 months ago.The couple, whose release from Somali pirates was secured last week, were taken hostage off the Gulf of Aden in October 2010 after armed pirates hijacked their yacht as it was about to enter the Mozambique channel, south of Dar es Salaam. The pair was rescued last Wednesday and flown from Mogadishu to Djibouti and then on to Rome, where Pelizzari’s mother lives. In the emotional homecoming, the frail-looking pair sounded strong spirit despite their physical condition.Speaking to the media shortly after their arrival, a tearful Calitz expressed gratitude to everyone involved in their rescue and those who kept them in their prayers. “We must have felt the vibrations of South African people because something kept us going … We love you South Africa.”The couple was received by International Relations and Cooperation Minister Maite Nkoana-Mashabane when they landed. The two spoke about their ordeal, which they described as inhumane, as they were treated worse than animals. Calitz said they were not fed well, were handcuffed 24 hours a day, and were also not allowed to bathe much. The couple was kept together and fed a high starch diet of rice, pasta and bread.“We were not allowed luxuries which meant no soap. We had one and half litres of water per day between us … it was just terrible,” said Calitz.Pelizzari, who holds dual South African-Italian citizenship, said they were happy to get their freedom back. Pelizzari, who said he came out of the ordeal a “new person”, told reporters that it would take a lifetime to repay everybody.Hitting back at their captors, he said what the pirates were doing needed to stop. He added that South Africa had created a rainbow nation and, as a country, it had to help others to do the same.Caltiz’s daughter Sam said their safe return was a miracle. “There are no words, it’s emotions, we are happy,” she said.Nkoana-Mashabane welcomed the couple, saying it was a happy moment. She assured the couple that no one would take their freedom away now that they were back in the country. The minister also took some time to express gratitude to both the Somali and Italian governments for their roles in securing the release of the couple. The instability in Somalia has exacerbated the growing scourge of piracy. Instability due to war and the absence of a functioning government have contributed to the worsening of the situation, while a lack of sustainable programmes for institution and capacity building also renders Somalia more vulnerable to natural disasters.Last year alone, 24 ships where hijacked in 134 piracy incidents off the Somali coast, according to the European Union Naval Force.Nkoana-Mashabane said Somalia, with the assistance of the international community, needed to evolve a developmental strategy that would a result in a prosperous and stable democracy. She also encouraged the families of those who were in similar situations not to give up.The couple is expected to debrief South African officials about their journey in the next few days.Source: BuaNewslast_img read more

first_imgShare Facebook Twitter Google + LinkedIn Pinterest The Senate Environment and Public Works Committee is considering legislation that would extend the Reid Vapor Pressure (RVP) volatility waiver to gasoline blended with 15% ethanol (E15). The bill would allow retailers across the country to offer more biofuel choices to customers year-round.The Consumer and Fuel Retailer Choice Act has 18 bipartisan sponsors and was introduced in March by Sens. Deb Fischer (R-NE), Chuck Grassley (R-IA), John Thune (R-SD), and Joni Ernst (R-IA). Senate champions have sought to bring the bill to a vote in the next few weeks.Earlier this year, EPA Administrator Scott Pruitt also expressed his hope for a fix but acknowledged the need for greater certainty in the laws governing RVP.“This is a simple and long-overdue fix that will improve air quality, lower prices at the pump, and level the playing field for homegrown biofuels,” said Emily Skor, CEO of Growth Energy. “We’ve been working with champions in the House and Senate for three years to get this over the finish line so that local fuel retailers have the freedom to offer cleaner-burning, less expensive biofuel blends all year long. Consumer access to E15 will provide a vital market for continued investment in the next generation of cellulosic biofuels produced from agricultural waste and other natural materials.”The proposal has broad, bipartisan support in both the House and Senate, in part because the current restrictions force many convenience stores to switch to lower ethanol blend options during the summer months, from June 1 to Sept. 15, and discourage many retailers from offering higher biofuel blends altogether.According to the Environmental and Energy Study Institute (EESI), E15 can help to “reduce harmful volatile organic compound (VOC) emissions, displace cancer causing emissions, and reduce smog forming potential, as well as cutting greenhouse gases … E15 is also typically two to 10 cents cheaper per gallon than E10.”“There is no reason for the current RVP burden that blocks retailers, like us, from offering our customers less expensive, earth-friendlier fuel choices year-round,” said Steve Walk, COO of Protec Fuel. “The Consumer and Fuel Retailer Choice Act is a common-sense policy that lifts this decades-old rule to allow fuel retailers to offer E15 during the summer driving season and provide our customers a consistent option at the pump that contains higher octane for a lower price.”last_img read more

first_imgShare Facebook Twitter Google + LinkedIn Pinterest A mix of clouds and sun expected over the Ohio today as warm air continues to push into the region. We expect more clouds in the north, but better sunshine potential in the central and southern parts of the state. Southwest flow will continue through the day. A minor disturbance lingers over MI and southern Ontario this morning, and clouds from that will be drifting across Lake Erie and into northern Ohio.  We see chances of a few scattered to isolated showers in those areas, down to around US 20. WE do not expect anything of consequence through the day farther south.  However, clouds will be increasing as we move through the afternoon and evening.Rain and thunderstorms arrive tomorrow. However, we likely will not see much of that truly get here until mid to late afternoon and the moisture ramps up overnight tomorrow night through Thursday. That means tomorrow morning and afternoon we continue to see clouds build, but will see some sunshine too. The more sun we see, the bigger the concern will be for thunderstorms in the afternoon and at night, as we charge up the atmosphere with extra energy. The rains from tomorrow late afternoon through Friday will be from .5″-1.5″ with coverage near 100% .Then we see lingering rain through Saturday bringing up to another half inch of rain over 70% of Ohio. Clouds finally give way to better sun on Sunday, but perhaps not until the afternoon. The map at right shows system total rain potential through Sunday morning.Next week starts damp. Scattered showers return for Monday with 75% of Ohio seeing up to half an inch of rain. Tuesday scattered showers bring 40% coverage to the entire state with rain totals up to .25”. Then Wednesday afternoon we see the largest slug of moisture arrive with a frontal boundary. . Rain and thunderstorms Wednesday late afternoon through Thursday trigger totals of .25”-1” with 90% coverage.Partly to mostly sunny skies finally muscle back in for Friday. As we transition into the extended period, we keep dry weather in over most of the state for Saturday the 27th but have to look for showers from US 50 south. Partly sunny skies are expected for Sunday the 28th. If this pattern is realized, that will be a significant dry window for at least half of the state…but it comes after some pretty significant moisture to start next week.As we finish April and move into May, we have rain returning Monday evening, the 29th, and continuing through midday Tuesday, the 30th. This brings .25”-.75” with 80% coverage. It will be followed up with scattered showers for Wednesday, May first, with .2” or less expected. A dry finish to the 16 day period is anticipated at this time for the 2nd.last_img read more

This undertaking is expected to last a year. Google has gained ground on its competitors, companies like Yahoo and Microsoft, by rolling out a series of map overlays for activities like walking and biking. But it has also registered plenty of exasperation from users encouraged to, for instance, bike through the White House.A Google spokesperson named Jordan told Seattle tech blog TechFlash that a lot of “the work will be focused on data management, said Newman. That includes keeping current on new business listings and the latest information on things like bike trails.”Google “is working with temporary staffing firms Randstad and Aerotek to find 300 ‘visual data specialists’ to improve the product.” 8 Best WordPress Hosting Solutions on the Marketlast_img read more

Drupal Gardens is a content management & social publishing system, offering “Drupal-as-a-service” and greatly simplifying the creation and management of Drupal websites. Prior to Drupal Gardens, those wanting to utilize Drupal to build their sites had to download and install the code themselves. In some ways then, Drupal Gardens is the WordPress.com for Drupal, although Drupal and Drupal Gardens are feature-rich, offering more than just a blogging platform. But like WordPress.com, Drupal Gardens may be an avenue that facilitates the open source platform’s adoption. Drupal Gardens is hosted on Acquia’s servers; there are no downloads or installation, and there are multiple templates for users to design and customize their own site layouts. Drupal’s adoption has been on the rise with its implementation by a number of high-profile websites, including NASA, The Onion, and the White House. More than 500,000 websites are now registered with drupal.org. The Drupal Gardens project has been in development for more than a year and already boasts over 12,000 sites. One of the features as part of today’s release is simplified site duplication. This allows users to clone an existing site, including its design, functionality, information architecture and content. This is a play for the enterprise, says Acquia co-founder and Drupal creator Dries Buytaert, as it will allow site builders to quickly roll out new microsites.Drupal Gardens will be free for all users until the end of 2010, when it will implement a pricing structure based on site size and traffic. The platform also features a one-click export button, so there is no lock-in to Drupal Gardens. 8 Best WordPress Hosting Solutions on the Marketlast_img read more

first_imgA Comprehensive Guide to a Content Audit Tags:#Facebook#Pause#social It looks like we’re not the only ones unplugging from Facebook. According to new data published on Tuesday by the Pew Research Center, 61% of current Facebook users have taken a break from the infamously addictive social network. The telephone survey culled its data from a sample of 1,006 adults in the U.S in December 2012.Some more interesting tidbits about these Facebook comings and goings:67% of online Americans are Facebook users8% of online adults who do not currently use Facebook are interested in becoming Facebook users in the future.20% of the online adults who don’t currently use Facebook say that they used to use the site.8% of the 61% of users admitted to taking a break from Facebook due to to concerns that they were spending too much time on the site.21% of those users said that their break from Facebook was the result of being busy and not having time to spend on the site.28% of Facebook users say the site has become less important to them than it was a year ago. Only 3% of Facebook users say they plan to spend more time on Facebook in the coming year.27% of Facebook users say they plan to spend less time on the social network in the next year. (Good luck with that!)Some 38% of Facebook users ages 18-29 expect to spend less time using the site in 2013.92% of people who use social networking sites maintain a Facebook profile.Pew also includes a funny little selection of comments in which people explain their Facebook breaks. Justifications include everything from “Too much drama” to “I gave it up for Lent.” Fair enough. The big finding here is that almost two-thirds of Facebook users have taken a break from the site. Facebook owns an insane amount of engagement, especially on mobile devices. But the majority of its users have been compelled to step back, voluntarily taking a break from the social network for a period of at least several weeks. Is the social network suffering from dangerous levels of user fatigue? But of course, while only 3% of users plan to spend more time on Facebook in 2013 than in 2012, the majority of Facebook users will likely maintain or increase the time they spend on the site as the company figures out new ways to become even stickier with its huge user base.Have you considered taking a Facebook break? first_imgOdisha’s ruling Biju Janata Dal on Wednesday won the Patkura Assembly constituency by defeating the BJP. The Congress finished third in the election held on July 20.BJD nominee Sabitri Agarwalla defeated BJP’s Bijoy Mohapatra by 17,920 votes. Ms. Agarwalla bagged 96,017 votes, while Mr. Mohapatra got 78,097 votes and lost yet another battle to enter the State Assembly for another term. Jayanta Mohanty of the Congress secured only 2,104 votes by the end of last round of counting of votes. Mr. Mohapatra, who won from Patkura four times – 1980, 1985, 1990 and 1995, was a member of Biju Patnaik’s Council of Ministers in his last term. Although he was a founder-member of the BJD, Mr. Mohapatra failed to contest the 2000 polls when the party cancelled his ticket at the last minute. He lost all elections in subsequent years. In 2001, he formed the Odisha Gana Parishad, which he later merged with the Nationalist Congress Party. He joined the BJP when the NCP turned an ally of the BJD before the 2009 polls. Often referred as Chief Minister and BJD president Naveen Patnaik’s bête noire, Mr. Mohapatra quit the BJP in November last, but returned to the party again before this year’s general election.Polling in Patkura, which was initially scheduled for April 29 as part of the simultaneous Lok Sabha and Assembly elections, was first adjourned due to the death of the Biju Janata Dal nominee – Ms. Agarwalla’s husband Bed Prakash Agarwalla. The Election Commission of India then fixed May 19 as the next date of polling, but it was postponed again due to Cyclone Fani that hit the State’s coast on May 3.The seat witnessed high-voltage campaigning, with senior leaders from the three major parties holding meetings to woo the voters. Mr. Patnaik also campaigned for Ms. Agarwalla for a day apart from a majority of his Ministers and party MLAs.last_img read more
