New Town commuters warm up to ebuses
Kolkata: The popularity of eco-friendly electric buses in New Town is increasing fast with 81,000 people availing the vehicles in the past five months.New Town is the first area in Bengal where air-conditioned electric buses have been introduced. Three buses have been introduced, which follow a circular route. Two buses are for Action Area I and one for Action Area II. The buses are going up to Unitech, covering the campus of St. Xavier’s University and Karigari Bhavan. The average speed of the buses is around 40-50 kmph. Before introduction of the buses, the drivers were given special training as they have to give tickets to the passengers themselves, as there are no conductors. The fare of the buses is Rs 10. The coaches of the 32 seater buses have been built by Eicher Motors. Taking cue from the success of the electric buses, self-drive car rental company Zoomcar has proposed to introduce electric vehicles that can be hired and used by people inside New Town. New Town has been declared as a green city and steps have already been taken by Housing Infrastructure Development Corporation (HIDCO) for its maintenance in this regard. Cycle sharing, an eco-friendly scheme, has become a great success in the area and discussions are on to introduce e-vehicles on sharing basis as well. LED lamps have been installed in street lights to conserve power.
