first_imgMr. Editor,After carefully reading Christiana Tah’s resignation letter, I could not resist adding my 2 cents to the discussion. It is clear that the legally-minded Madam was economical with the truth, especially after six years at the head of the Justice Ministry. Like many flunkies, Chris Tah wants us to believe her “righteousness indignation” that she was a supreme legal mind, making changes in Liberia’s judicial landscape. This is far from reality. Exhibiting an inflated sense of self-importance, she displayed a deep-seated arrogance towards her boss and to use her word loosely “collegiality” of executive peers. When did she realize that she presided over the “rhetoric of the rule of law?” can she spell rule of law? It is evident that Madam Tah did not understand her terms of reference and duties as Minister of Justice and Attorney-General. It is only in her twisted mind that she believes the National Security Agency (Liberia’s intelligence service) is subject to her authority and should be investigated by her. One senior security expert familiar with the Liberian security sector shared with me that from the days of Patrick Minikon to date, the NSA has been answerable only to the President of the Republic of Liberia, coupled with legislative oversight. My Justice Ministry contact described the recent complains of the former Justice Minister of not investigating the NSA as dishonest and manipulative. My contact said specific allegations were made against agents of the NSA and not its Director Fombah Sirleaf. Contact said the NSA had turned over all pieces of evidence to the former Justice Minister, who appeared not satisfied with the cooperation but in vindictive spirit wanted to damage the reputation of the Agency and its Director. My contact noted that NSA was cooperating fully with the Jallah Commission. The fact is Madam Tah had so many other cases to investigate and prosecute. What stopped her for the last six years from going after these cases? What did she do to correct the perennial accusation against the police force as seen in the Amnesty International, Transparency International and Human Rights reports? What legal brief did she provide the President in exercising the constitutional duties under the Public Health Laws to fight Ebola? She fell flat on her face, because she chose to misinterpret our laws, collaborate with felonious attorneys-at-law to frustrate cases form the LACC and harass professional security experts, who dare provide a counter argument to her disingenuous views of our civil and criminal laws. What is the Justice Ministry doing with an intelligence budget, when their role is supervisory and certainly not operational? Has she accounted to the National Legislature on how those monies were spent and the effect on Mother Liberia? The Ministry is a big department that had some many moving parts that needed to be upgraded and fully functional. What did she do about building the competence and capacities of the Justice Ministry? Sorry the “coming out of war” excuse will not hold water. As Dean of the Supreme Court, humility is an expected quality of all those who hold that authority. It is with good sense that the Bench gave Chris Tah the legal spanking that was long overdue. One wonders what she scored in jurisprudence as a law student. She lost more cases at the Supreme Court than any other Justice Minister recent history. In fact, no one can recall seeing Christiana Tah ever pleading at any court in Liberia. She misbehaved and refused to do the honorable thing-resign. Her greed was too overpowering.Liberia has seen Opinions of Attorney-Generals from Louis Arthur Grimes to James A. A. Pierre, providing the width and breath of legal thinking during different administrations. One wonders what Christiana Tah’s opinion, if any, would read like? What did she counsel on the Chronicle case, human trafficking case, Nov. 7th, 2011 shooting, ect?Fellow Liberians, the latter-day resignation is the handiwork of an ungrateful egotist, driven by the octopus of arrogance, greed, deceit, disingenuity, mischief, unprofessionalism, manipulation and over-weaning pride. We breathe a heavy sigh of relief with the exit of Christiana Tah from Government and hope she does not surface any time soon in any national leadership role as her stint is poor example of public service.Share this:Click to share on Twitter (Opens in new window)Click to share on Facebook (Opens in new window)last_img read more

first_imgGabriel Nyenkan, President Weah’s choice to head to LEITI Secretariat-Transparency Watchdog Global Witness wants Pres. Weah withdraw Nyenkan’s nomination immediatelyPresident George Weah’s controversial appointment at the Liberia Extractive Industry Transparency Initiative (LEITI) has not only sparked a barrage of criticisms locally but has also received its initial international condemnation with global anti-graft institution, Global Witness (GW) calling for an immediate withdrawal of the nominee.President Weah, on March 5, announced former Montserrado County Lawmaker Gabriel Nyenkan as the new head of Secretariat, replacing Konah Karmo who was appointed by the Multi-Stakeholders Steering Group (MSG) of LEITI in 2014, following a competitive recruitment process in which several other individuals and institutions participated.Following President Weah’s announcement, Mr. Nyekan stormed the offices of the LEITI secretariat with armed Police officers in tow and demanded that its head Konah Karmo leave the building. Karmo is reported to have complied with Nyekan’s orders given at virtual gunpoint. But Nyekan’s action was greeted with almost instant rebuke by civil society groups who condemned the action. This was followed by condemnation by other watchdog groups including Global Witness (GW) who, in a release issued on Monday, condemned what it termed as the illegal removal of LEITI Head Secretariat, Mr. Karmo—in clear violation of the act that created the anti-graft entity.“Global Witness strongly condemns the illegal removal of Mr. Karmo, Head of Secretariat of the Liberia Extractive Industries Transparency Initiative (LEITI). The firing of Mr. Karmo by President George Weah, who has replaced him with Gabriel Nyenkan, violates Liberian law and severely undermines the independence of Liberia’s critical anti-corruption agency”.The international watchdog also declared the removal of Mr. Karmo and his replacement by Nyekan as illegal and called for the withdrawal of Nyekan’s appointment. Its extractive industries campaign leader, Simon Clydesdale declared “President Weah must immediately withdraw his appointment of Gabriel Nyenkan, allowing Konah Karmo to resume his duties as LEITI Head of Secretariat.”Stressing that because the independence of the LEITI is fundamental to its mandate and to the political stability of Liberia, the institution cannot be what he (Clydesdale) termed as the “playground of political appointments”.Further, according to Global Witness,  the Act creating the LEITI which states that only the Multi-stakeholder Steering Group has the authority to appoint or remove the Head of Secretariat, serves as a critical safeguard which maintains the institution’s independence and ensures that it is not subject to foreign interference or dominated by any of its constituent groups.A March 19 Global Witness press release said “LEITI is an autonomous Liberian agency that ensures transparency in Liberia’s forestry, oil, mining, and agricultural plantation sectors. It has the legal mandate to publish company contracts and the money they pay to the government. LEITI is governed by an independent MSG that is comprised of representatives from the government, companies, and Liberian civil society groups. Together, these representatives can keep one another accountable and ensure LEITI continues to promote and deliver transparency”.In a related development the Acting Chairman of the opposition Liberty Party (LP), Abraham Darius Dillon, has said  it is a shame that such an error would not have been corrected by the President after blatantly violating the law.“When we spoke against Pres. Weah’s illegal appointment of Gabriel Nyenka as Head of LEITI, loyalist CDCians that never see anything wrong the President does, even if such wrong was inadvertent, told us to “shut up”; insisting the President was “right”. Now, our international partners are speaking and condemning the very appointment. Let us see now if these loyalist CDCians will tell the same to these international partners,” Dillon wrote on his facebook pageIn other related developments, President Weah’s appointment of  Weah’s action has also been  condemned by the Center for Transparency and accountability in Liberia (CENTAL), noting that it is disturbed by the President’s action.CENTAL is the Liberian affiliate of Transparency International (TI). Its Executive Director, Anderson Miamen said in a press release that the sanctity and credibility of integrity institutions must remain intact.“The government, especially President Weah, must do nothing to undermine that, whether directly or indirectly,” Miamen said.He noted that the President overstepped the limits of his authority by ascribing to his office unassigned powers; something which is worrisome and must have no place in the new Liberia.“The rule of law is a fundamental pillar of our maturing democracy and such arbitrariness has the propensity to reverse gains made in strengthening governance and the rule of law in the country,” he noted. The LEITI Act of 2009 requires the President to appoint members of the Multi Stakeholders Group (MSG), and “shall designate one of them as the Chairperson and another as the Co-Chairperson”.“The power to recruit the Head of Secretariat, Deputy and other staff members of the LEITI Secretariat therefore lies with the MSG, which should comprise of members of the legislature, CSOs and the Executive,” according to Section 6.3d of the Act.Though Section 6.5 of the LEITI Act of 2009 ascribes the appointment of members of the MSG to the President, Section 6.3(d) grants the MSG the “power to recruit and dismiss the Head of Secretariat, Deputy and approve the recruitment of other staff members”.Share this:Click to share on Twitter (Opens in new window)Click to share on Facebook (Opens in new window)last_img read more

first_imgjolie odell In a new series exploring the anatomy of truly viral apps, our first specimen is Spymaster, the Twitter- and Facebook-based social game that exploded with tens of thousands of users within hours of the creators throwing up a simple page and absolutely no media coverage. From creating addiction to managing site traffic, read on to learn how they did it and what they’re doing next. What kinds of outreach did you do during the early days?Chris Abad, CEO of Irata Labs, the company that developed Spymaster, revealed that their early promotions were extremely minimal“We threw up a splash page, but didn’t talk about it too much. Really, our first ‘outreach effort’ was sending out some invites to a few of our friends, and things ended up taking off on our own from there.”To give some context, Abad told me that I personally had signed up for the game within a couple hours of its launch; by that point, I had already seen a few tweets and a DM about the site and was completely intrigued. Bonus round! What’s next for the Spymaster team?“We do have some pretty exciting stuff we’re working on right now,” said Abad. “It’s still a little early to get too far into it, but we do hint at the new project here.” Our guess is as good as yours for the moment, but we’re guessing at a deep-sea adventure that, like Spymaster, will test our limits and exceed our expectations.“More than anything,” Abad concluded, “Spymaster was about innovating in the social gaming space. It was about answering the question, ‘What can we do that’s unique and outside-the-box?’ We pushed a few boundaries with Spymaster, and had a lot of fun doing it. With our next project, we’re taking a lot of the ideas and lessons that came out of Spymaster and pushing that mentality even further.”If the web 2.0 dictum “Once, you’re lucky; twice, you’re good” holds water, this next app will show whether Abad and his team have found a pathway to Internet virality or whether Spymaster was simply a lucky strike. But after dissecting this truly viral blockbuster of a game, aspiring startups might put less weight on luck and make a study of the Spymaster method. Tags:#start#startups Many web apps claim virality; very few actually find it. Why Tech Companies Need Simpler Terms of Servic… In your opinion or experience, was it media coverage, influencer buzz, or both that contributed to a large group of users signing up?“Especially on Twitter,” said Abad, “everyone is really big on ‘influencer buzz,’ but I don’t feel that was a very big factor with Spymaster. There really wasn’t as much as we were hoping for in that area.”Even without top Twitter users getting into the app, however, Abad said other factors were at work to create the viral effect, the first being media attention.“The media buzz (there was a lot in the first few weeks of Spymaster)… provided the fuel. And some of the intentional viral mechanics built into Spymaster, things such as public activity updates, DM invites, common hashtags, etc., were really the vehicles through which the word of Spymaster spread.”Some of those mechanisms were not too appreciated by users; and as the tide of Spymaster-themed, auto-generated tweets swelled from users who were given in-game incentives to keep on tweeting, irritation became a public outcry and threats of unfollowing circulated.Still, back-and-forth banter and “assassination” plots were the guilty pleasure of many an early adopter and even a few tech bloggers (guilty!).center_img 8 Best WordPress Hosting Solutions on the Market A Web Developer’s New Best Friend is the AI Wai… What about Spymaster do you think made people want to sign up and start using the app?Abad said that design, fun, and a certain addictive factor made Spymaster irresistable to early users.“People wanted to try it because it was an interesting, well-executed game. For a web-based, social game, the creative around Spymaster was phenomenal. [Read our interview with Spymaster designer Eston Bond for more background on designing web apps.] Also, as people played it, they found the gameplay to be interesting (even addicting at times). In short, it was something fun to do.”Also, he noted that there was a particular novelty to Spymaster. It was the first massively scaled Twitter-based game, and within a day or two of its launch, he said, “It quickly got to the point where it felt like everybody was doing it, and a lot of people would check us out just to see what all the buzz was about.”What did you learn about handling massive amounts of traffic? In your case, were there unexpected traffic spikes?Spymaster lead architect Ben Myles said, “We had some huge traffic in the early days of launch from all the press we garnered. It wasn’t completely unexpected, but it was also aweek of non-stop optimizations and maintenance.”So, what did the Spymaster technical team do to counterbalance a massive wave of user traffic?“We did some obvious and simple things,” said Myles, “like moving the majority of our static assets to [Amazon] S3. When we first launched Spymaster our data store was primarily MySQL. We started hitting some concurrency issues with MySQL, and over the period of a few weeks we moved most of our data into a key/value store (Tokyo Tyrant). The success we had with Tokyo Tyrant exceeded our expectations and our scaling since we made that shift has been relatively painless.”What are your future plans for scaling, including internationally? As most users have noticed, Spymaster has expanded over the past few months to include Facebook, MySpace, and iPhone apps in addition to the original Twitter game.“We also proactively advertise, and have a growing user base in other English-speaking countries,” said Abad.If you could pass on one piece of advice to the founders of the Next Big Social App on how to get a critical mass of users, what would you tell them?“Experiment,” said Abad. “Try different things until you find something that ‘catches.’”Most important to apps that aim for virality, he continued, is that the push for user adoption and ever-increasing traffic can never stop or slow. Especially when your app unexpectedly explodes out of its petri dish and takes over the lab, “That’s no time to let up on the gas.”“Critical mass is often one of those things where you don’t know what it is until you’ve already passed it, so you push even harder.”Abad also said “social” apps should be social by design. “This doesn’t mean throwing an inviter screen in there a few days before launch… Work the tools into that process that make it easy for your users to spread the word to their friends.”Also, he said, “Your most passionate users are often your best marketers. Treat them well, and reward them for evangelizing your brand.” Top Reasons to Go With Managed WordPress Hosting Related Posts last_img read more

first_imgThe birthplace of the American Industrial Revolution aims to become one of the greenest towns in MassachusettsThere is no firm schedule worked out quite yet, but over the next five to ten years Worcester, Massachusetts, will evaluate, strategize, build, and retrofit its way to a greener existence. The motivation for this transformation is rooted in a combination of ecological and economic ambitions, and it is building momentum. As a recent story published by the Worcester Telegram & Gazette pointed out, environmental concerns prompted the city, in 2006, to join the Local Governments for Sustainability, an international association of more than 1,000 local governments from 67 countries that is committed to sustainable development.Concerns about shrinking the town’s carbon footprint prompted the emergence of the Energy Task Force, originally an academic alliance that two years ago developed the town’s Climate Action Plan, which identifies strategies for reducing energy use and the emission of greenhouse gases. The Energy Task Force has since become the town’s official engine of green transformation. Using a share of the $482 million in federal stimulus funds allocated to Massachusetts over the next two years, the city aims to develop its long-range energy plan on the greenest terms possible, create jobs in green industries, and develop a science plan that keeps Worcester-based researchers ahead of the curve of newfangled green technology. (The town is home to Worcester Polytechnic Institute and Clark University.)Targeting residential retrofitsOne of the most effective ways to get Worcester’s green going is to improve energy efficiency in its existing buildings, and make the most it can of the $122 million in stimulus money the state has received for weatherization, David Angel, a Clark professor and member of the task force, told the Telegram & Gazette.“How do you improve energy efficiency in a place that is already built up?” he asked rhetorically. “Retrofitting residential space rather than focusing on new construction.”Energy efficiency retrofits could come into play in a major way in some of Worcester’s older homes. One such property, a four-bedroom, two-bath 1910 Victorian, whose listing at $339,900 is currently being promoted through a private-public program called Buy Worcester Now, has attracted a fair number of prospective buyers, but no offers as of yet.The listing broker, Jason Piedrasanta, points out that people who have toured the home like its leather wainscoting, wood floors, tiled fireplaces, formal layout, and approximately 2,480 sq. ft. of living space. But many are concerned about the cost of heating and cooling the building, whose aged windows leak air liberally.Piedrasanta points that out the house is prime candidate for the kind of green upgrade that is being touted by the city’s Energy Task Force. Although the Victorian’s double walls still insulate quite well, he says, window replacement would be among the most cost-effective single measures one could take to improve the home’s energy efficiency.last_img read more
