Photo by Jessica Fitch.by Tracy McCue , Sumner Newscow — In basketball, they call it “getting into the zone” — that rare occasion when a basketball player gets so hot he/she can’t miss. But Baylee Booker, an Argonia freshman girls basketball player, wasn’t just hot last Friday night – she was record-setting, unstoppable, smoking, burn-the-gym-down hot.And she appears to be on her way to making the state record books. On Friday night, when the Argonia girls upset Flinthills 65-54 at home, Booker went 8-for-8 from beyond the 3-point line. She had scored 26 points for the game including a layup. After review of the books and looking at both the game films of Argonia and Flinthills, it was determined Booker never missed.Argonia girls head coach Dixie Brewster called the Kansas Sports Hall of Fame this week, and officials there say that there has never been a girl basketball player who has shot more than five three-pointers without missing.“You see players go 1-for-1 or 2-for-2 on 3-pointers a lot,” Brewster said. “But it is highly unusual to get one girl hitting 4-for-4. Baylee had eight of them. Incredible.”The girls basketball record for 3-pointers is 12, Brewster said. But even that girl wasn’t shooting 100 percent. The thing is, nobody realized such a record was happening at the time.Oh, everyone knew Booker was hot that night, for sure. And she was nailing her outside shots despite being sick with a stomach virus. She had to leave at one point in the fourth quarter to vomit in the locker room. But Booker came back and asked the coaches if she could play again. Brewster put her back on court and she hit another 3-pointer.“We were talking about it after the game and my husband, Dean, does books,” Brewster said. “I asked him if she had four or five 3-pointers, not really keeping track. We looked at the book, and holy cow she hit eight shots.”Then after some more talk, nobody could remember if she actually missed a shot.“We started looking at the film and the answer was no,” Brewster said. “She never did.”The thing is, there was no game plan to give Booker the ball and let her shoot. Jessie Tracy, a junior, is the team’s best 3-point shooter.“They were more focused on her,” Brewster said. “We have always told our girls, if there is a hot shooter, get her the ball. Baylee was hot that game, but never was that really the focus. It just happened.”Flinthills was in a zone defense most of the evening, and there was no box-and-one defense implemented on her when she started scoring. Booker is only 5-0 and her being a freshman may have made the opponent overlook her, Brewster speculated. For the Argonia girls, it was a huge win. The Lady Raiders knocked off the No. 2 team in the SCBL, which up to that point hadn’t lost in league play. The Red Raiders were 6-11 at the time and are now 8-11 after another win Tuesday against Oxford.Booker, who averages six points a game, had two points on Tuesday night against Oxford. Like getting that hole in one in golf, getting in a record setting zone doesn’t happen every ball game.Follow us on Twitter.last_img read more

first_imgBY EMMET RUSHE: Everywhere you turn, they are there.Everywhere you go, they are waiting for you. There is no escape… Holiday nibbles are EVERYWHERE!!!It’s that time of year again where every house, shop and work place seems to be sponsored by ‘Pringles’ or ‘Roses’.It doesn’t matter how good you are, you would need the will power of a Tibetan monk to avoid sneaking even one nibble this Christmas. The inevitable is upon us, so do we give in completely or do we try and have a bit of control over our hand to mouth interaction? What it comes down to is this;Do you have something coming up in January that will require you to remain around the same weight?Has trying to be strict with your diet, over Christmas in the past alienated you from your family and friends? Are you at the point where allowing a bit of dietary freedom will actually allow you to relax and enjoy the festivities for once? For some of you, the Christmas break will be a time to recharge the batteries and you should use it as such. But, if you have something coming up and you are worried that the holiday season will throw you completely off track with your goals, I have some simple tips below that can help. Here are a few things you can do to prevent the inevitable spill over that comes from too much Christmas cheer.Don’t turn up to a party hungry. If there is one sure way to end up sitting in the corner, surrounded by empty Roses wrappers and with a chocolate ring around your mouth, it is this. Turning up to a party hungry is a recipe for disaster. As soon as the party mix is set down on the table you will be on it like a lion on a gazelle. Before you go to a staff party or house party, try and have a good meal with plenty of protein in it.Protein is very satisfying and you won’t be hungry after eating it.If you are already full and not hungry you are less likely to binge on everything in sight when you get there. Don’t sit at the nibbles table. Everyone wants a comfy seat.No one wants to turn up to a party and have to stand all night. But the weigh up between standing and sitting can be a table full of nibbles right in arm’s length. If you are trying to be a bit good this year, try and not put yourself right in the danger zone by sitting in front of the table of snacks. You will be mid conversation with all the other party goers and won’t even realise that you’ve polished off the bowl of ‘Bombay mix’ or that tube of Pringles all by yourself.Pace your alcohol intakeThis is a good piece of advice for a few reasons.Firstly, if you pace your drinking, you are less likely to get the alcohol munchies early on in the night therefore lessening the damage that you could do.You are also taking in fewer calories through alcohol, especially if you like cocktails with high sugar mixers.Secondly, if you pace your alcohol intake, you are less likely to make a shambles of yourself in front of your work colleagues and have reminders of your antics on Facebook the next morning…Like singing karaoke, when there was no karaoke!Avoid excessive drinking and tasting when cooking. When preparing meals this Christmas, try and avoid having the bottle of wine beside your glass. You will be less likely to keep topping up your glass and the bottle might last you longer than the time it takes to stuff the turkey. When cooking, try to limit the amount of tasting that you do, a taste shouldn’t be eating a whole turkey leg while basting.Walk it offFinally, if you are going to indulge yourself over the festive season, try at least to get up the following morning/afternoon and go for a walk. You will be burning up a few of the previous night’s treats and it is something that you and your partner, friend or family can do that might just last into the new year and become a habit that you could keep.Lastly, remember that Christmas only happens once a year and unless you have good reason to monitor your food, you should relax and enjoy the festive season! My New 2016 Transformation Challenge kicks off January 4th.There has been a huge amount of interest in these classes this year so I am rolling out 2 new time slots at 7am and 6pm on Monday, Wednesday and Fridays. These are sure to sell out, so don’t leave it too long to book.Contact me through the link below for more information.#TrainSmarthttps://www.facebook.com/pages/Rushe-Fitness/120518884715118EMMET RUSHE’S FITNESS COLUMN: HOW TO SURVIVE THE CHRISTMAS CHEER was last modified: December 20th, 2015 by John2Share this:Click to share on Facebook (Opens in new window)Click to share on Twitter (Opens in new window)Click to share on LinkedIn (Opens in new window)Click to share on Reddit (Opens in new window)Click to share on Pocket (Opens in new window)Click to share on Telegram (Opens in new window)Click to share on WhatsApp (Opens in new window)Click to share on Skype (Opens in new window)Click to print (Opens in new window)Tags:columnemmet rushefitnesssurviving Christmaslast_img read more
