The Somali federal authorities and the Puntland local authorities must conduct a serious and thorough investigation in order to identify those responsible for this murder and must take action to guarantee journalists’ safety.” The reporter, Abdirizak Said Osman, was stabbed to death by unknown attackers at around 11 p.m. on 18 September as he left Voice of Peace, a local radio station in Galkayo, a city on Puntland’s southern border that is mostly controlled by the Puntland government. The editor of Voice of Peace said that, the day before Osman’s murder, the station received a call from a person claiming to be member of Al-Shabaab who said: “Stop inciting against Shabaab or otherwise we will take action.” When Abdirizak Kasim Limaan, a cameraman for UK-based Somali Broadcasting Services, was shot dead by a police officer at a checkpoint in Mogadishu on 26 July, RSF immediately issued a call for the arrest of the officer responsible. Nearly two months have gone by since then, and he still has not been arrested.last_img read more

first_imgWe are quite proud of the fact that RewardStream is a pioneer and veteran in the referral marketing industry, designing referral marketing programs for our clients since 2003. While “word-of-mouth marketing” or referral marketing has always been a very natural and normal part of daily life, the rise of automated marketing solutions to generate leads and referrals is in its infancy. Following the tremendous success of products such as HubSpot, Marketo, Eloqua, Infusionsoft and others, “content marketing” has certainly earned buzzword status. As a result, companies that we work with often ask us how referral marketing and content marketing solutions compare and how they can be used together. Before I dig into the numbers, let’s look at the definitions of these two marketing methods. Basic Wikipedia explanations tell us that:Referral marketing is a method of promoting products or services to new customers through referrals, usually word of mouth. Content marketing is any marketing that involves the creation and sharing of media and publishing content in order to acquire and retain customers.Essentially, referral marketing is acquiring new customers through word-of-mouth while content marketing is sharing educational blogs, papers and emails to acquire customers. While there are definite similarities, both solutions can and should be used to generate leads and referrals as part of a successful marketing mix. To understand both solutions, let’s dive into some numbers.Lead Nurturing via Content Marketing – The NumbersLead nurturing via content marketing is used by more organizations, with 72% of marketers having a content strategy in place, whereas only 22% of marketers are leveraging customer referrals. Content is more widely used, but is it more profitable?41% of marketers confirm content marketing has a positive ROI; however, 79% of marketing leads never convert into sales. Lack of effective lead nurturing is the common cause of this poor performance. So in order for content marketing to be successful, the leads that it brings must be nurtured.Referral Marketing – The NumbersIt’s not surprising that 92% of people trust recommendations from the people they personally know and people are four times more likely to buy when referred by a friend. If you are a new business owner, you’ll be happy to know that one study reported that 65% of new business comes from referrals. Word of mouth or referral marketing is tried, tested and true, and in my opinion, the most effective form of marketing. I’m not alone, 88% of marketers believe that referral marketing is one of the best ways to acquire new customers. But what is the ROI?Another common question I get is in regards to the return on investment of each tactic. Referral marketing has the lowest cost per acquisition among digital marketing activities, making the ROI very attractive to many businesses. When comparing to content marketing, data suggests that content marketing will break even on its investment within nine months, based on the value of the organic traffic, and will see a 200% or more ROI from that same content over 36 months. The content will also increase the organic site traffic by 10 times. What makes referral marketing so critical as a key tactic in a successful marketing mix is that if your program attracts one customer – it doesn’t stop there. Not only does a referred customer have a 16% higher lifetime value than that of a regular customer and 18% higher loyalty than a customer acquired through a different method, they will also spend 13.2% more than a non-referred customer. What makes referral marketing so powerful is that when an existing customer utilizes the program, there is a snowball effect that must be taken into consideration when measuring ROI; the number of additional referrals that will come from this one person. How can Referral Marketing and Lead Nurturing via Content Marketing Work Together? It’s simple really. Content marketing is utilizing content to attract people to your brand and turn them into your brand advocates. Referral marketing is using your customers as brand advocates to acquire more customers. 83% of satisfied customers are willing to refer products and services but 29% actually do. So the key is to encourage customers to tell their friends and family members about your business. How do you do this? By leveraging your referral marketing with content marketing tactics.Best Practices For Growing Your Referral Program With Content MarketingKeep these tips in mind when combining content and referral marketing strategies to help increase both leads and referrals:Content marketing can help build trust with the public. If you have a referral marketing program, the more existing customers who are aware of it, the better chance you have of it gaining traction. Content marketing is a powerful way of building trust with potential customers as you nurture them through the buying journey. When you send out an email communication, post a blog, or engage via social media, you are essentially building trust with your audience. If potential customers receive regular communication from your company, you have already established trust with them. This trust can help increase your chances of potential customers remembering you when they are ready to make their purchases. Once they become customers, a referral rewards program is a nice way to keep them happy, and will encourage them to share their positive brand experiences with their friends and family members. Developing this relationship with potential and existing customers is important, as people trust the opinions of their friends, making it a very powerful marketing channel.Content marketing can help promote a company’s referral program.Rule of thumb – the more eyes the better. Make sure that you include information about your referral program on all public-facing communications and content at each stage of nurturing your leads and referrals. Make sure that you create a referral button in a key location on your website. If you accept online orders, put a referral button on your order confirmation page and/or post-purchase “thank you for purchasing” page. Don’t forget to also promote your referral program anywhere your existing customers will go, such as customer login or on high-traffic pages such as customer support or help desk pages. Keep in mind that all of the above should link back to the stand-alone referral page. When distributing all content marketing, use this opportunity to promote your referral program. Ways to promote your program include:Email blast – Email your customer list and your ambassador list the “refer a friend” offer.Blog– Create a blog and link to the offer. Look around for guest blog opportunities and ability to promote program.Newsletters– Don’t forget to include program information in company newsletters and correspondence including receipts, invoices and support tickets.Call scripts– Integrate mention of the program into your call center scripts.Facebook, Twitter and LinkedIn – Announce program, share and link back to the referral program page.PR– Create a press release, issue and promote program in conjunction with a newsworthy item.Internally – Promote your referral program internally! Your employees should be your biggest advocates!Content Marketing + Referral Marketing = Your Own CommunityThe great thing about referral marketing is that you start your own community without even really trying. Your leads and referrals become your brand ambassadors, and over time will grow into a community. You can also connect with your loyal online fans to promote your referral program and have them spread the word. By identifying key referrers and engaging with them, they will promote not only your referral marketing program, but your products and services, as well as your organization too.Precision targeting increases your chances of a sale. The precision targeting of referral marketing, combined with quality and educational content that is specifically focused for your leads is the perfect combination that will lead to a very successful marketing campaign. Referral marketing targets your brand advocates and by doing so, taps into the most lucrative salespeople for your organization – the trust of friends and family members. What does a successful referral program look like?Dropbox is a good example of a double-sided referral program that garnered some great results. After Dropbox became dissatisfied with their conventional marketing techniques, despite still doing relatively well, they decided to leverage their existing customers to refer friends via word of mouth. How did they do this? They launched a double-sided referral program that rewards both the referee and the referral with 500MB of additional free storage space (up to 16GB). What was the result?Dropbox went from 100,000 to 4,000,000 users in 15 months and increased their sign-ups by 60%.Why was this referral program so successful?Dropbox’s doubled-sided referral program provided incentive to the referrer to spread the word and the referee to sign up, by offering them each 500MB of space. Not only is this type of program enticing to both parties, but it is also extremely easy for the users to share and sign up. The combination of an attractive double-side incentive, plus the ease of use, led to Dropbox’s tremendous success with this program. In my opinion, the best results are achieved when you use referral marketing and content marketing together to maximize leads and referrals. If you create an enticing referral marketing program that is simple and easy to navigate and use your content marketing to promote it, you can’t go wrong. To ensure the best possible results, make sure that the content you produce relates to the long-term strategy of your referral marketing plan. The single most important thing to remember is to make it easy for people to share your content and easy for people to refer your product and/or service. 40SHARESShareShareSharePrintMailGooglePinterestDiggRedditStumbleuponDeliciousBufferTumblr,Rob Goehring Rob Goehring is the CEO of RewardStream, a leader in automated referral marketing solutions for credit unions, financial services and telecommunications companies. first_imgThe latest headline figure was modestly better than market consensus of an 8.0 percent contraction, but it is the worst figure for Japan since comparable data became available in 1980, beyond the brutal impact of the 2008 global financial crisis.Separate data released by the internal affairs ministry Tuesday showed Japan’s household spending in July dropped 7.6 percent on-year, also underlining the impact of the coronavirus on the economy. The 7.6 percent drop was the 10th consecutive monthly decline and comes after a 1.2 percent slide in June and 16.2 percent dive in May.The figure came in much worse than economist expectations of a 3.7 percent decline, Bloomberg said. Japan’s economy was in recession even before the coronavirus hit due to damage from a powerful typhoon last year, and a sale tax hike in October. The country has seen a smaller coronavirus outbreak compared to some of the worst-hit places, with about 71,800 infections and fewer than 1,400 deaths.A nationwide state of emergency was imposed as cases spiked in April, but the restrictions were significantly looser than in many countries, with no enforcement mechanism to shutter businesses or keep people at home. The emergency was lifted in June, and the government has been reluctant to reintroduce measures, even as infections rise again.Topics : Japan’s economy shrank slightly more than initially thought in the April-June quarter, official data released Tuesday showed, deepening a contraction that was already the worst in the nation’s modern history. The world’s third-largest economy shrank 7.9 percent in the second quarter of this year from the previous quarter, more than the initial 7.8 percent in the preliminary data, the Cabinet Office said. The downward revision comes with corporate investment weaker than in the preliminary data released last month, as the coronavirus deepens the country’s economic woes.last_img read more

first_img17 Jul 2020 Lamb’s lockdown lessons spark Tillman Trophy success Tags: Matty Lamb, Tillman Trophy Matty Lamb has admitted lockdown sharpened his appetite for golf – and allowed him to cut loose this week and claim a career highlight. The England men’s squad player saw off the challenge from international team-mate Ben Schmidt on Thursday to win the 2020 Tillman Trophy at Foxhills Golf Club in Surrey. The Northumberland golfer’s four round total of 12 under par was enough to earn him a two-stroke victory in an event which carried not only prestige, but vital World Amateur Golf Rankings (WAGR) points.Lamb followed on from the 2019 success of England colleague Joe Harvey and joins a Tillman Trophy roll of honour which also includes four-time major champion Ernie Els.Rounds of 69, 69,71 and 67 showed that there was little wrong with Lamb’s ability to score when it mattered most.Yet the 22-year-old believes there is more to come from him now that his love for the game has been stoked again.Lamb (pictured above after his win) said: “To be honest I didn’t play that well, but obviously I scored well.“It was a bit scrappy from tee to green, but the putter was hot all week and I holed out really, really well.“It just felt so good to be back out playing competitive golf again.“It’s strange being stuck at home for months when your life has evolved around golf.“In an odd way the lockdown maybe helped me. I began to appreciate golf again and when we were allowed to come back to the course I enjoyed it a lot more.“For me, the break may have come at a good time.“I was able to work on technical things by hitting into a net in my garden and was also able to talk about things with my coach Andy Paisley.“I was able to practise things I wouldn’t have done had I been out playing all the time and it’s obviously paid off.“Maybe being on the couch for three months is the answer!”Lamb knew he was coming under pressure from Yorkshireman Schmidt (pictured below) down the stretch on Thursday, but was able to fend off his international colleague.A birdie at the 72nd hole sealed the win and followed up from his success last season in the Hampshire Hog and Home Internationals with England.Lamb – a member at Hexham Golf Club – added: “Ben has been winning everything so it was good to get over the line.“I hadn’t played the course before this week and maybe coming into it blind helped me a little.“I found the course fairly simple if you could keep the ball on the fairway off the tee and I avoided having any bad holes.“Now I just want to kick on and make the most of what’s left of the season.“I have a 2020 Pro Tour event at Rockcliffe Hall on Monday and the following week it’s the English Men’s Amateur Championship.“I had always planned on staying focused on my amateur career until after the 2021 Walker Cup so my long-term plans haven’t changed with this year’s disruption.“It’s a case of building on this week.”last_img read more

(AP Photo/Amy Sancetta, File)  by Ralph D. RusoAP College Football WriterThe most scrutinized committee in sports has been set. The members say they’ll need thick skin, plenty of time and the ability to leave their loyalties behind to pick the four teams that will play for college football’s national title next year. They say they are ready for the pressure.“I think I’ve experienced plenty of heat in my life,” former Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice said.Rice, former Nebraska coach Tom Osborne and College Football Hall of Fame quarterback Archie Manning are among the 13 people who will be part of the College Football Playoff selection committee in 2014. The committee was officially unveiled Wednesday. This combo of undated file photos shows 12 of the 13 members of the College Football Playoff selection committee that were announced on Wednesday, Oct. 16, 2013 by committee chairman Jeff Long, the athletic director at Arkansas. (AP Photo/File)The College Football Playoff will replace the Bowl Championship Series. The selection committee will work similarly to the one that picks the teams for the NCAA basketball tournament, though instead of 68 teams it will choose and seed four to play in the semifinals. The winners of those games, played on a rotating basis at six bowl sites, will meet a week later for the national championship.“There will undoubtedly be people who disagree with the outcome,” Rice said.Rice was a surprising pick to be part of the committee because she has never worked directly in college athletics, though when she was provost at Stanford the athletic department was under her supervision and she hired Tyrone Willingham as football coach. She called herself a “student of the game.”“What I can hopefully bring to this committee is critical judgment and the willingness to work real hard … to put the best four teams on the field,” she said.Rice, who grew up in Alabama, said college football has been trying to come up with a way to crown a champion for years and mentioned how the 1966 championship was muddled when Notre Dame and Michigan State played to a tie.  Notre Dame was voted champion by the coaches’ and AP polls, but Alabama went 11-0.“It enhances head-to-head competition,” Rice said about the new system. She said Pac-12 Commissioner Larry Scott approached her about being part of the committee.“Condi definitely earned her spot on this committee,” said Bill Hancock, the executive director of the BCS. “Obviously, part of this is going to be the ability to make judgments under scrutiny, and Condi has that.”Rice is the only woman on the committee. Some, such as former Auburn coach Pat Dye and former Georgia star and ESPN analyst David Pollack, have said they would prefer only those who have played football to be on the committee.“I’ve been in enough positions to respect people who have different views,” Rice said. “I will work very hard reviewing film to make good judgments.”She added: “I don’t feel I’m carrying the banner for anyone except those of us who love college football.”The panel is made up of five current athletic directors, former players and coaches and college administrators, and a former member of the media.“Our work will be difficult, but rewarding at the same time,” Arkansas athletic director and committee chairman Jeff Long said. “We have important judgments to make during that process. We realize we represent all of college football.”The rest of the members are:—Barry Alvarez, athletic director, Wisconsin.—Lt. Gen. Mike Gould, former superintendent of the United States Air Force Academy.—Pat Haden, athletic director, Southern California.—Tom Jernstedt, former NCAA executive vice president.—Oliver Luck, athletic director, West Virginia.—Dan Radakovich, athletic director, Clemson.—Steve Wieberg, former college football reporter, USA Today.—Willingham, former head coach of Notre Dame, Stanford and Washington.—Mike Tranghese, former commissioner of the Big East Conference.Hancock said term limits for committee members will eventually be three years, but that will not be the case for all the current members because they do not want to replace the entire committee at once.“We haven’t worked out the stagger yet,” Hancock said.Committee members will recuse themselves when a team they have a direct relationship with comes up in meetings.“It’s imperative for all committee members to check their loyalties and affiliations before entering the meeting room,” Jernstedt said.Hancock said the committee members will be allowed to examine whatever data they believe is relevant.“No one single metric will be identified as paramount over all other data,” Hancock said.Long said the committee likely will release four or five top 25 rankings during the season, starting around midseason, before the final decisions are made at the end of the regular season.“I know it’s going to have long hours involved,” Alvarez said. “Obviously, criticism will be a part of it.”___AP Sports Writer Stephen Hawkins in Irving, Texas, and freelance writer Benjamin W.
